“I look to the likes of Neal Maupay, Aaron Connolly, Leandro Trossard and Alireza Jahanbakhsh and what they achieved last season and think we can help them improve those goal tallies,” Potter added.

GPott sees him every day in training. That he's not played him virtually at all since he's arrived, says a lot to me.

Seems a nice bloke and obviously skilled looking at his AZ career and the overhead kick was my goal of the season by far. But still GPott not playing him speaks volumes

I think we should decide for ourselves based on what we observe from a player's contributions, whether we like a player or not, not based on coach's inclusion or exclusion of the player. Otherwise, there is nothing to discuss here, every team selection, formation, substitution is perfect because the coach sees and knows more than us. A coach can have a blind spot, or can be too conservation, too stubborn, too this or too that. And opinions can vary 180 degrees. All of us can watch the same game and somehow, exactly half of us hate how Stephens played and the other half pick him for the man of the match... The beautiful game.

And if they don't we're probably going down.

Oh for pities sake. The only difference between last season and the coming one is Muzza who came on 23 Times scored once with one assist. Added to the team are a stronger defence, much improved midfield and a year of playing a different style of football. We have 2 (after watching that vid, 3) out and out strikers and a strong attacking midfield. I guess with comments like this you are fishing for a job with BBC Sports.

The way people perceive things is very interesting. So many people freaking out because Muzza has left, beside themselves that without him we have no-one to replace an injured Maupay or Connolly. At the same time these very people are demanding we sell AliJ. Move the subjective perceptions aside and look at the stats Ali was far more productive than Muzza. 10 appearances vs 23, 2 goals vs 1, goals per game .2 vs .04

Admittedly I haven't found total minutes played but the point stands.

To extend the logic of playing Ali J upfront, why not try Tolaj and Yapi there too. We could get Cashman back from loan. Maybe they could work as a three?
You never know, it could work Amazingly.
I can’t think of any reason why not to give it a go.
And Locadia....his confidence is probably back. Holland international. Get him back.
What the worst that could happen? Etc.

In such a key position we need a more consistent performer than Ali J, folks. However much we want him to do well. That’s the long and short of it. And I’m sure Potter knows this.

That's not what I said.

I said if they don't perform as well or score goals we'll go down. I'm talking about the strikers who scored last season.

They are taking a risk, pays off we're fine, doesn't pay off we're down.

Buying a striker is a risk too, sometimes even those with proven goal scoring records in the Prem don't work out at a new club.

He simply has not been given the chance to be a consistent performer.

His success in Holland came from playing the position Salah occupies for Liverpool.

He has had very few opportunities playing as a forward on the right of an attacking front three.

He is one of the best players we have for this position should Potter choose to play him there.

Don’t confuse talk of him needing to score more goals with a plan to convert him to a number 9. I’m sure we’ll have a new player for that role (just about) by the time the transfer window slams shut.

In the Salah role? Ok, fair point, maybe worth a go But When I see AJ I see a player struggling With the speed and strength required in the Premiership (worldy aside). Much as I want him to do well.
My post was also not aimed at the likes of you, as you recognise we need To recruit a goal scorer, if we want to push on. Some don’t.

How many times did Ali J start under Potter for you to arrive at this conclusion?

And some interesting facts:

I hear some say that after he scored his two goals in two games, GP started him for a game or two but he did not perfrom... I wonder how you justify Maupay's 9 game goalless run or Connally's god knows how many games without a goal run.

I see that people on this forum like statistics... I won't put names next to them but let you figure out which one is Maupay, Trossard, Connolly and Jahanbakhsh in the 2019/2020 season:

10 goals in 2770 minutes of play
5 goals in 2012 minutes of play
3 goals in 1259 minutes of play
2 goals in 307 minutes of play

I'll let the statisticians figure out who has the best record of minute of play per goal... Hint: He was not born in the this continent.

Speed and strength are definitely areas where is game lacks.

However, seeing if he has the instinct to be in the right place at the right time (given license to stay in an advanced position) would be interesting. This is Potter’s problem to solve and I’m interested to see what he’ll do with him whilst Ashworth and his team try and solve the recruitment issues.

I am not saying that he is a better player based on this stat. I am just trying to point out that statistics are tricky and need a lot of context to be meaningful. And most definitely, ranking players in different soccer stats and adding the rankings and deciding who is the best player is completely useless. Especially when players played different positions during the season. Be careful of raw statistics and how you use it.

I think you, Vagabond, missed the point on "be careful with raw statistics".

Both the AJ-negative stats posted by Johnny Roastbeef some pages back and these AJ-positive stats share the same massive flaw that they are only based on 307 minutes of play. Its just not enough to be of any kind of use. Take a random 307 minutes out of Gary Dohertys career and he might look like Glenn Murray or Harry Kane. Take a random 307 minutes out of Lewis Dunks career and he might look like Paolo Maldini or Gary Doherty, depending on which those 307 minutes are.

When reaching 1000 minutes or so it starts to get interesting and at 2000 minutes you can get a decent picture. But 307 minutes is just too little and too random to say "Ali J is a shit winger / Ali J would be PL top scorer if he got the chance".

It's a different option and depth though.

We have Maupay and Connolly at present. We offer little threat even if we get a decent cross in with strikers who are bang average height.

Perhaps I wasn’t clear, but this is precisely the point I was trying to make in regards to people saying AJ isn’t consistent enough ^

Very much this. It must be up to GP to decide whether AJ gets the chance to prove himself. If he does we can judge then. If GP decides he is not good enough to chance then as an AJ positive person I would be sad but accept that it would be better to part company, get some money back and give him the chance to seek his success elsewhere.

Does the fact that he hasnt started much tell you anything?
The tedious AJ debate can go on and on.
I have seen enough On the field, and in potter’s judgment, to believe it unlikely he will suddenly become a consistently influential Prem player. That’s not to say he’s not capable of The odd great moment, as he’s shown.
In a lesser league with a team that has more possession in forward areas, he’d probably do Very well.
