Sad news for his family but, he was apparently a nasty piece of work. When I lived in crawley many lifetimes ago it seemed everyone had an Alan Minter story and they rarely caste him in a good light.

I worked in a pub in Crawley in 1980. Minter's dad was a customer, and a real piece of work.

I have got the programme from that match signed by Minter and both teams - as a 9 year old it was my pride and joy. In fact, it is still the best set of autographs I possess - that Forest Team had some big names.

They were the reigning European Champions at the time ️

A part of his family, the Kenny's, were involved in a diamond robbery with the Richardson's. One day somebody turned up with a bag and put it on the bar of the horse and groom (Islingwood Rd) which the Kenny's ran and said there's no head on the beer. There was a man's head in the bag. At the time, the landlord was on remand for the diamond robbery and died of a heart attack.
My dad used to drink in there regularly and I was at school with the kid. We moved away partly to get away from them.

I once had to speak to him at his home in West Hoathly and he was still world champion at the time I think. He answered the door in his pants and I don't think I was able to utter a word

I remember the open bus tour around the town centre when he won the world championship.

He also used to own a restaurant on the High Street.

Minter and Daley Thompson were the big Crawley sports stars back in the 80's

Wasn’t his dad a bit of a ‘character’ as well round the town? my godfather who was a plasterer on the building sites around the town in the 60s & 70s used to say avoid Minter Snr at all costs.

Didn’t Alan Minter do a pre-match or H/T appearance at the Goldstone after winning one of his belts?

I've lived in Reigate and Redhill for 15 years and I haven't seen him once. I have to make do with sightings of Joey Benjamin, who seems to spend his life in Corals.

When I lived in Reigate he was often to be seen in quite a few of the pubs. Unfortunately, he was almost always pissed as a fart and could be quite objectionable to the extent of people leaving the place to avoid him.
It was a sad to see a great sportsman end up like that.
Anyway, RIP Alan, I remember watching some of your fights on the telly and I hope you have now found peace.

Yes, used to see him in Reigate every weekend in my early drinking days in the 90’s.

The Market was a favourite of his. Never found him too much trouble but a few of his hangers on were pretty unsavoury.

I recall a night in The Panther and him regaling is with tales of buying sports cars with Mike Tyson.
He then fell off his stool and offered the landlord out.

He liked a drink. Frankly I’m surprised he made it this far.

Great boxer though.

I used to see him in the Bull's Head quite often, and on occasion, the Prince of Wales.
Agree re the hangers on.
