... but we didn’t win 3/0. We barely threatened their goal & our last friendly match was similar. A friendly it was - but it’s glaring for all to see how poor we are up front & how little we create.

It’s going to be a tough season - but hey we have loads of defenders to keep the goal differences down.

We were playing a weakened team minus several key players in a kick about friendly.

I don’t understand how you can extrapolate from that it’s going to be a tough season?

Completely agree with all the comments about how awful that game was.

But......WBA were a big part of that - They came to play a blocked up game. We didn't do very well at breaking it down but had impact players missing.

At least we looked better than them and have a rival for being last on MOTD each week.

This. If we were pants, they at least were fresh ones on today.

WBA looked like a pair that have been worn since the start of lockdown.

The difference with Webster is that he had the attributes for his position to succeed (height, speed, tackling). McCalister doesn’t appear to have the speed, skill, power to succeed in his position in the PL in our team. If he had more pace around him that would help and I’d bet he look better in a stronger PL team but not sure he will be good enough for the starting 11. I haven’t wrote him off (believe it or not) and technically he’s good but don’t think he should be ahead of many others at the moment (Gross, Propper and even Ali J who has contributed more and is used to the tempo like you say).

Christ sake the boy has played a handful of games He came here during a pandemic Give the boy a chance ffs

March has played well in the last two games IMHO. Ali J also isn't going to play LWB.

Matter of opinion. Find myself saying often how well he has defended. Just so rarely contributes much to our attacking play.

1. Connolly and Lamptey's stock has risen simply by not playing.

2. We need a striker sooo badly.

Man, the bed wetting in this thread is embarrassing.

It was just a nonsense preseason kick about friendly, mainly used to get the fitness up. Naturally players were holding back as the season starts in a week.

And look at who we were missing, Lamptey, Velts, Connolly, Trossard, Molumby. All going to be key players this season in our starting line up or off the bench.

And because we had no other RBs Alzate had to drop down into a utility role.

Add to this we will still likely conclude more business come end of the window.

Get a grip.

Thanks for ignoring the point of my post.

It was a pre-season friendly FFS!! and i KNOW we didnt win 3-0!!

Lets see how we do with a FULL squad and further signings

Its a bit too early for rattle-throwing!

Bed wetting here because we’ve drawn a couple of friendlies (against Premier League teams) is LOLs. We’ve just finished playing a series of 9 proper, competitive games, including 4 against last seasons top 5 clubs, and managed to accumulate 13 points. Keep that up over 38 games and we’re comfortably in the mid 50s.

And let’s not forget we have actually improved that squad already.

Lots of Macallister bed wetting. How many are ex Webster Wetters?

He had a bad game, but still needs more time. He wont start if he doesnt improve, but too soon to write him off. He's a good player, this league and tempo takes some getting used to.

21 years old in a new country adapting to a new way of playing in a new team and league. Way too early to be judging anything.

I used to think that Maupay didn't get the service as the main issue, However, after watching him closely today, I gave him far too much credit.
He was Absolutely no threat to WBA at all. The two central defenders didn't have much to do, to keep him quite.
Very poor movement off the ball. Very easy to mark him. Couldn't turn with the ball and couldn't even hold it up when he did get it.

The only real threat was bissouma from midfield. This needs to change.

I was starting to feel quite happy with our chances this season. You lot have certainly put a stop to that.

Well this result doesn't fit the PR machine of the young exciting team in the bright blue kit that have just recorded our highest top flight points tally. Ashworth/Potter/England/Top10 bla bla bla

Reality: a bang average squad which has been added to with an experienced/past it sicknote and an exciting centre back from the Championship

Lallana really is a classy addition!

I didn't realise the transfer window had closed...

Thank you. In that case very strange couldnt get a run out in a friendly. Something is up and think he deserves a go. It is not as if March is looking great. Unless of course Potter not interested in wide players

Forget about getting a run, ARJ wasn't even on the bench. And we had only six on the bench, two of them were goalies!!!! Extremely strange. I just checked the last training photos and he was there, so no international duty. Either got injured in that last training session or we will be hearing about his transfer in the next few days!!!

Yes a strange bench. No striking option apart from Gross. If Maupay had got injured surely it would have been worth throwing Cashman on even just for the experience.

That was a very sobering performance.
I felt buoyant after last weeks display against Chelsea.

I'm trying to reassure myself at how much difference it will make to have Lamptey and Connolly buzzing about when they return and also having the reassurance of Veltman in defence.
However, today Stephens seemed to slow everything down almost as if we were protecting a 2-0 lead with only ten minutes remaining. Unfortunately he was like that throughout the game. And MacAllister seemed void of any confidence. There also seemed to be far too many sloppy passes that went astray in the second half.

There will be lots to analyse by people that know far more than any of us about tactics and setting up a pattern of play. But without a second striker and without more penetrative passing it will be another battling season rather than the expressive and exciting season I was hoping for.
I've fallen back down to earth with a bump.

Note to self: Be more realistic and don't get carried away.

Today's ratings from yet another armchair fan that has no footballing expertise:

Very Encouraging: Bissouma, Lallana
Encouraging: Dunk, March
Reasonable: Ryan, White, Webster, Alzate, Groß
Jury's out: Bernardo, Stephens, Maupay
Worrying: MacAllister.

Absolute TEXTBOOK bedwetting from a pre-season practice game.

Sobering ? Mate - it was a training session. A fitness exercise. A trot-around - zero conclusions can be drawn. It never ceases to amaze me how much weight some people put on these meanginless games by seeing them as some kind of a direct comparison to what happens when the REAL stuff starts.

Seriously. Don't worry about it.
