I like Baker too. Love the books and loved his radio and TV music shows. But his hubris after the last sacking seems missplaced. Even though the sacking was wrong.

It's all about nuance isn't it. And opinions. :lolol:

I know, sacked for comparing a black woman to a chimp, what were the Beeb thinking about?

I loved visiting Griffin Park, proper old school stadium. I only ever visited one of the four corner pubs but it was pretty decent, from memory.

So that's not what he did.

I'd check that memory.

So what Danny did is Tweet a photo of Harry and Meghan holding hands with a chimp with the caption: "Royal Baby leaves hospital". OK he might have been pissed, but if it didn't occur to him that we he was doing was disgustingly racist then he clearly is a f*cking idiot.

What was the joke? I remember this but can’t remember what the actual point of it was?

Baker has traditionally posted/ talked about pictures of animals dressed in clothes throughout his career.

Upon the birth of the royal baby, he showed a picture of a posh white couple (despite megan being being black) leaving a building with a small chimp dressed in posh clothes.

Some believed that he was comparing the mixed race baby to a chimp.

Yes. It was that odd.

It wasn’t. It was a very old stock photo probably from Victorian times of two posh looking people holding hands with a chimp dressed in a suit with a bowler hat and a cane.

Yeh I looked it up. Very bad error of judgement and don’t like the guy much, but if his explanation is true I do get it... ‘ Was supposed to be joke about Royals vs circus animals in posh clothes but interpreted as about monkeys & race, so rightly deleted.’

This bit I sympathise with IF true:
After the initial backlash on social media on Wednesday, Baker said: "Sorry my gag pic of the little fella in the posh outfit has whipped some up. Never occurred to me because, well, mind not diseased.

As in, I do think people often look for connotations of any ‘ism’ when sometimes it’s not meant at all cos you don’t think like that. George Floyd thing a prime example for me personally - I didn’t even think about his race or the officers race when watching that video - all I thought was utter scumbag and police brutality...

But yeh, Baker is a prick I think & craves attention on twitter.

Oh and one thing I don’t get from what you said - Megan is not black! Not in my book, not that it matters but yeh...

That piece of ground has laid waste for years.
I go past it quite often and have seen how it's developed recently, agree about Griffin Park, reminds me of going to the Goldstone.
Tony Bloom should've put copyright on the 'community' aspect of the naming of the stadium, Benham still jealous I guess :lolol:

That just shows the marketing genius of Dick Knight his community stadium pitch to Amex has been sold over and over. He should be asking for commission.

It's very obvious to anyone who has followed his career that it was part of a running gag of him posting animals dressed as humans and indeed I'd seen him post that picture before. He was posting it in relation to a royal wedding and it didn't click about Meghan and the connotations until it was pointed out (frankly I pay no attention to royals either and didn't make the link when I saw the tweet) when he took it straight down. I am 100% sure there was no conscious or subconscious racism intended in the tweet but, by his own admission, if he had thought about it he would never have done it. He was an idiot for not thinking the tweet through but he has paid for it with his BBC career and will be forever thought of by the hard of thinking as racist now so I think he has paid his penalty for tweeting without thinking.

He hates royals that has been part of his career as well. OK many dont like them. Not being aware of using a chimp to be derogatory to a person of colour was an ignorance that I dont believe him capable of. He knew what he was doing. I have never seen him apologise for it either.

You both have good points and I can see both opinions but the fact is we’ll never know for sure and that’s the sad thing about these sorts of accusations I guess.

If he didn't know Meghan was mixed race, how is it 'disgustingly racist'? Unless pictures of people with chimps are inherently racist? Baker should never have apologised and given the BBC an easy way out.

Baker clearly meant to be disrespectful to the institution of monarchy and power - but sadly for him, the people viewing his joke were not just those who've known his "japes" (some of which I like - and I did enjoy him on the radio, but then I'm the age of the old audience) but also included a younger generation who are much more sensitised to potential racism than people were in the past.

They saw an old Victorian photo of an ape in human clothes and having been primed that ape == racism, had a predictable reaction. Those who have heard Baker through the years know that wasn't how he was thinking at all - but it was an act not sensitive to modern sensibilities: the world had moved on and Baker hadn't been paying attention. I certainly don't think Baker deserved what he got, but he should have thought more before doing it.

I've heard a couple of interviews where he has apologised and he was well aware of the connection between a person of colour and a chimp and indeed has said that they were always careful not to use pictures of chimps in any way that could be misconstrued but he didn't click that Meghan was indeed a person of colour. His target, such as it was, was indeed as you say the royal family. I suppose whether you believe him depends on whether you accept that it didn't occur to him that Meghan was a person of colour.

I think Baker had used the picture previously when bald prince became a father. He should have left it there. He was never gonna get away with it with ginger prince and his Mrs. Rightly so.

I will happily concede if I see a quote because some of what he does i love to listen to. But all i have heard listening to him and seen quoted is that he said he wasnt aware because he isnt that nastily minded and that isnt an apology.

As you say his target was the Royal Family but it really looked bad and ignorant.

If you saw that picture and thought it was racist then youre the racist in my opinion. If I called my child a "cheeky monkey" im not being racist

If your child went through racism at school sure you would feel different. What your parents call you versus what a celeb calls you clearly in a derogatory way even it that derogatory way maybe wasnt what he meant (Still dont buy that). You are the racist here because you still cant see it.
