Why not! You can make him look how you want as there's is no contemporary evidence he actually existed. Even the reference in Josephus appears to have been added several centuries later! Saying that, he does come across as a very lovely character!

This is a forensic anthropologist's model of what Jesus may have looked like.

I’m more worried about the outrage if the next James Bond isn’t black or a woman, ideally a black woman

There are whole industries dedicated to creating Jesus tat, balanced by some fabulous religious architecture, art and writing (not so much the music, which really is a mixed bag). No need to fret over a black Jesus.

. The painting, by Lorna May Wadsworth, made headlines last year when it was discovered to have been shot with a pellet gun by a vandal whom she believed disagreed with her portrayal of Jesus.

Ms Wadsworth said: "Painting the Last Supper altarpiece made me really think about how we are accustomed to seeing Jesus portrayed. Experts agree he would most likely have had Middle Eastern features, yet for centuries European artists have traditionally painted Christ in their own image.

"I cast Jamaican-born model Tafari Hinds as my Jesus to make people question the Western myth that he had fair hair and blue eyes. My portrayal of him is just as 'accurate' as the received idea that he looked like a Florentine. "

People who spend most of their lives babbling on about imaginary sky friends getting upset because someone wants to change his colour is delicious.

Textbook stirring from the OP. Throw in a little grenade, with a rather misleading title, then sit back and watch the fun.

Here's an article describing a little more clearly: https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/cathedral-last-supper-jesus-black-man-a4484561.html

They've commissioned a new print, rather than blacking up Jesus on an existing image, as suggested.

A version of the Last Supper with Jesus as a black man is being displayed at St Albans Cathedral in support of Black Lives Matter.

Visitors will be able to see a high-resolution print of Lorna May Wadsworth's nine-foot take on the 15th century Leonardo da Vinci masterpiece when the Church of England cathedral reopens its doors on July 4.

And some relevant quotes:

The Very Reverend Dr Jeffrey John, Dean of St Albans, said: “The church is not in a strong position to preach to others about justice, racial or otherwise. But our faith teaches that we are all made equally in the image of God, and that God is a God of justice.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, head of the Church of England, said Christians in the UK should rethink perceptions that Jesus was white.

He told the BBC's Today programme: "You go into churches [around the world] and you don’t see a white Jesus.

“You see a black Jesus, a Chinese Jesus, a Middle-Eastern Jesus – which is of course the most accurate – you see a Fijian Jesus."

I used to have some doubts about the concept of white fragility but they have been completely wiped out in recent weeks.

Jesus, son of Mary, is a prophet in Islam too. It appears that the portrayal of the prophet Jesus in Islam is of darker skin. More akin to what you would expect from someone hailing from ME / N Africa.

We will never know for sure whether "Jesus" actually existed. If he did, we will never know the colour of his skin. Does it make any real difference whether he was black or white?

The OP maybe also needs to consider the "black madonna" images that have been prevalent in both catholic and orthodox countries for centuries.

One other issue: it always seems strange to me that "God" is seen by Christians/Jews/Moslems as male. Or at least depicted as such in religious paintings etc.

You'd think that this supernatural being that created all life would more logically be female, if it had to have any gender at all.
