Are you being deliberately obtuse?!

You pick one specific example (which was essentially a 'counter riot/protest') and ignore all the other riots that happened around the world.

What started these BLM protests (some of which turned into riots)? What started the 'hands up, don't shoot' chants? Have you forgotten, or are you just playing dumb?

I was using whataboutery to bring the topic back to where it started - pro white protests IMO inspired by racism. That was because of all the other deliberately obtuse stuff on this thread trying to change the subject to BLM and Marxism etc.

I expect the irony of that has sailed over your head.

In his own honest words. A great journalist and broadcaster.

The book is fantastic. I used to read it on the plane to Edinburgh when I was working there and then carry on reading it in the hotel. For a Remainer he gives a few good arguments and reasons for Leave. Someone like Plooks should have read it but I expect he would have dismissed Humphreys as a Tory the second he heard about his house in London.

Thanks for replying. Now he freely admits his passion for the EU and our membership, but being truly intelligent, he listens and understands both points of view.

Top bloke.

So for those advocating cuts, what's the plan?

There's a spectrum of ideas but generally the consensus is that funds would be diverted to social services and invested in communities, targeting things like education, housing, mental health and youth services. In the States, police budgets dwarf those of other sevices- over 100 billion dollars is spent each year. Currently, according to something I read recently, US police spend up to a 5th of their time responding to people with mental health issues. One study claims that a quarter of those killed by police is suffering from a mental issues.

At the moment police are tasked with dealing with every societal failure, from homelessness to drug overdoses, which they're ill equipped to do. As I said before, itmakes sense to me to get to the root of problems rather than criminalising sections of the population.

So in other words, you jumped into a discussion and ignored everything else being discussed just to make an irrelevant point. Great.

Are people not allowed to discuss BLM in this thread?! What's wrong with discussing the founders of the BLM and the ideology their leaders follow? That doesn't diminish the need for more equality and tackling racism. Surely you are able to distinguish between the two things?

And I'm curious to know what you thought was deliberately obtuse in the discussion. Why did the protests start again? Why are people chanting George Floyd's name?

I'd suggest the "Black Lives Matter" thread in this very Bear Pit would be a better place.

No need for that.

I'm sorry if I offended you but actually yes, there's every need to call this scumbag out for what he is.

Clearly a nasty racist thicko who hides behind his attempts at looking clever to cover his RACIST agenda.

I can see straight through it. I'm sure lots of people can. As I said, I wouldn't normally post something so offensive about a fellow poster but this idiot takes the piss.

"What about...." What a ****.

I see, so “gloves off” for you means that you have free rein to accuse someone you consider to be mentally retarded with racism for expressing an opinion you disagree with?

As an imbecile you will appreciate that it’s difficult for me to understand why the violent murder of 2 young black men in a single gun related incident in Manchester on Saturday was seemingly less important to the media than the violent murder of 3 white men in Reading on the same day.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-manchester-53135677

If we are to change the ingrained systemic racism that exists in the U.K. the stories of these 2 young black men should have been as important as the 3 white men in Reading?

An opportunity to present these 2 Black lads to the wider public so we can understand their lives has been missed, in contrast one provided by the media and Government provided for the Reading victims. No minutes silence, or Home Secretary leaving flowers at the scene of their deaths.

That’s very sad and the kind of grievance I would expect BLM supporters and especially local ones like Micah Richards to be making their views known.

As I said, it’s hard to know what to think these days but then again I am a simple minded half wit.

Backtracking bullshit. You and I both know what you really think. Yes, you are a simple minded halfwit, because all racists are. And you are a racist.

Your whataboutism posts about people trying to make a better life by getting on a boat that they may well die on are the perfect example.

You try to turn everything round to immigrants or black on black deaths and you deflect and obfuscate when it comes to the real issues.

Racist.

I'm all for more money to go to mental health services and to tackle social issues. I agree in that it's a 'two pronged approach'. Just cutting police funds is not addressing the root of the problems in the police. If these police departments are run by incompetent leaders, less money isn't going to make them better leaders.. And in some of the States where they have the worst run police departments, they spend about 3 times less than in States where violent crime has been reduced, so there could be an argument for these departments needing more funding not less (but again it ultimately comes down to reform not throwing money at the problem, or withholding funds).

I guess we are pretty much on the same wavelength, so I'll leave it at that! :bigwave:

Please...Baker lite....I was told earlier that the tongue in cheek use of ' atrocity ' had gone over the top of my head....and now I see it again. Is this a serious use of the word or not?

Ok.. atrocity is a bit strong, can we agree that the flying of that banner is a ****ing outrage?
I am so angry right now.

Well, if my concern for why a story of the violent murder of 2 black lads in Manchester was seemingly downplayed in contrast to the violent murder of 3 white lads in Reading makes me a racist then I must have missed a meeting. Perhaps you can send me the minutes?

If there is one truth in recent days we can both agree with we need to understand the challenge there is in black communities, and why (say) the rates of violent murder are higher than white counterparts.

I am keen to learn, but the (possibly) racist media won’t teach us...........I know all about why there was a violent murder of 3 white lads by an asylum seeker. I am A* on that subject following the last 2 days.

Tell me about the shooting of the 2 black lads up in Manchester.........not much to ask is it, even for a half wit.

At best, that's wishful thinking. At worst, you'll end up with more people being killed (both police and citizens).

There's nothing stopping Government bringing in reforms, in fact in the US, Donald Trump has already introduced some new regulations around policing.
You don't need to starve the police of funds in order to increase standards of policing. That's a dangerous game.

Oh the "Executive Order" that was signed by the man who was encouraging Police to not be too nice smash their head on the van while arresting a few months ago.

If statute laws and executive orders contradict each other, statute law wins and the executive order is nullified. The general US population is required to obey statute laws, but not executive orders.

He has done sweet FA and left it to the states, some are making changes but it isnt uniform and you just know the southern states are going to carry on as normal. Choke holds were already outlawed or discouraged in most places. It isnt a game for people who have been ignored for decades.

You seem to agree that police reform is required and that was my point. I'm not debating what Trump has done is effective or not. I actually don't even think choke holds are that dangerous if applied properly. One of the problems is lack of training and 'lower quality' of people joining the police force (which would get worse with less funding), this is what makes choke holds deadly.

It is a dangerous game to just leave it up to 'the southern states [that] are going to carry on as normal'. That is what's happening. My point is it will be worse if funding is reduced and reform needs to be done by central government, not leave it up to local governments or allow the police to police themselves, as we know that simply doesn't work in a lot of States.

And obviously the US also needs to elect a President that gives a damn (UK isn't all that different but in the US some areas are like a war zone).
