My Mum told me that she did Vera's hair a few times while she was working at a Hair Salon in Hove, she worked there from 1934 to 1943. I don't know exactly what year it was and can only suppose Vera was visiting relations/friends as I think she lived in London during this period, either that or my Mum was bulls******g (sorry Mum, I don't think you were, honest).

Anyway besides all that, RIP Dame Vera.

If you are right, we will have the football matches this weekend start with a minutes silence to Vera, followed by the referee playing “the white cliffs of Dover” on his whistle while the players gently and reverently wheel round him (socially distant) with their arms outstretched taking on the forms of hurricanes and spitfires as a moving tribute to Vera and the generation that fought fascism she so inspired.

I reckon it will be another tribute though.....

In the mid-80s the 10th combined with the 4th Brighton to make a single football team. The 4th were an 'interesting' group of lads who were known as the 'Millwall' of the league. There were 6 Vinnie Jones in the team plus whoever turned up from the 10th.

So I've got my credentials of respect; it's just that Dame Vera's death will become today's big story when there might be more crucial matters to dwell on. That's all.

No, it IS a big story and if you ignore the passing of such an inspirational figure - as someone has already mentioned a National Treasure - then what sort of country have you become? The woman literally helped us win WW2 by keeping a nations spirits up during some genuinely dark times, the likes of which almost all of us have little comprehension or experience of.

What more crucial matters do you have in mind?

I knew a Burma Veteran who sadly died last year, who held Dame Vera in the highest esteem, he said she went out to Burma to entertain the boys out there. Before she went, nobody else would go.

Exactly that. My father who died in 1973 served in both India & Burma during the war with the RAF. He steadfastly refused to speak of the absolute horrors he witnessed but always mentioned the bravery and moral boosting visit of Vera Lynn. So I'll raise a glass tonight to them both and probably have a tear in my eye.

As an aside, I've just spoken to someone who knew her well, and he said he was on a Zoom call with her a few weeks ago. Fair play! I know many people far less than half her age who can't even get on a Zoom call!
