From my understanding potter had a tactic last year v Sheffield Utd which appeared to work ref the over loading CBs. No idea what it was mind.
So I’ll go with in a 4-2-2-1-1 formation

Ryan

Montoya
Webster
Dunk
Burn

Stephens
Propper

Grob
Mooy

Trossard

Maupay

Both games (and wins) over Sheffield last year was a struggle in first half and complete domination in the others. Their CBs dont overlap a lot if they dont have the ball...

Just a reminder folks:

After Week 17: Most chances created: Premier League 2019/20

1. Kevin De Bruyne: 62 chances created (1316 minutes)
2. Trent Alexander-Arnold: 52 chances created (1483 minutes)
3. James Maddison: 43 chances created (1414 minutes)
4. Pascal Gross: 42 chances created (1109 minutes)

I believe these stats are inflated because these players take the corners and free kicks. Not sure, guessing.

Of course, but if you look at those top 4 - Man C, Liverpool and Leicester will win more corners and free kicks than Brighton (as will Man U, Spurs etc.) - yet Pascal is up there for chances created. I’d be interested in “chances created per set piece” - as I suspect Pascal tops the Premier League in that stat.

We have just dominated an away game without a natural defensive midfielder. It worked and this is a home again, Basouma,Mooy and Propper all showed attacking intent at Palace which is not something Stevens will do. Same team but maybe Alzate for Gross

I'm interested in the chances created figures as well.

Pascal is an excellent delivered of a dead ball and we've shelled about 15 six yard headers this season.

I've got to say though I can't remember a chance he has created from open play. I'm sure there are some.

It's a surprising statistic to me, because when I watch us I don't see a team that squanders loads of opportunities, I see a team that gets into great positions then doesn't always find the final ball.

- for me - the midfield quartet of Mooy, Gross, Propper and Stephens picks itself. If fit and available I'd start those four every time.

Terrific players, but this only leaves us two places for Bissouma, Trossard, Alzate, Connolly, March (presumably sometime) Izquierdo, Ali J.

I can see a bit more rotation that that for the rest of the season.

To me there are about 6 selection decisions all over the pitch that are wafer thin. subs are closer to the first team than I can ever remember

Mooy, Stephens, Propper, Gross then Maupay and Connolly, but if Connolly not on his 'A' game it's Trossard. In my mind it's clear cut - Alzate a good utility player, Bissouma and March impact subs.

I can't see Izquierdo or Ali J giving us anything in a Premier League match. Potter is brilliant but he isn't a magician.

We need goals from midfield or the winger, thats where we need to strengthen .

Not playing any wingers makes it rather difficult for them to score. :dunce:

A little heads up for the 'weekend bets' thread, I now firmly believe we are stooopid for not betting on Montoya to score.

I had a pound on him, on Monday, he was 20/1 to score anytime.
He has to get one at some point over the rest of the season making it profit-tastic.

Although I wouldnt argue against it I cannot see GP dropping Webster for Duffy even if I would do that and also Burn for Bernardo.

I think Propper played the Stephens role better than Stephens does.

I'd be leaving Dale on the bench.

I think this will be a very difficult match. Not seen Sheff United to know if they any good or not? My pre-season relegation tip with Watford and one other club.

Ryan
Webster Duffy Dunk Burn
Montoya Pröpper Mooy
Groß Maupay Trossard

subs: Button, Bernardo, Stephens, Alzate, Connolly, Balogun, Murray.

Thank goodness the team will be nothing like this.

The ‘four centre backs’ system was used against Burnley to stop and intercept long balls blasted down the flanks to Wood and Barnes.
It was highly successful in stopping Burnley’s central tactic of scoring away but they then scored a Man City style goal with perhaps their only shot on target! Adding a fullback to the four centre backs is an additional insult to reason, football tactics in general and common sense.

However, the question does remain on how Potter tackles a possession based wing backs side similar to our own?

My guess is that he’ll set-up exactly the same as them and rely on us having better players.

Trossard now officially shitehouse then?

Ok.

I’ve changed my mind and stuck him on the bench.

You may want look at that again.

Help us with this, because i'm trying to think of the assists he has got.

I'm happy to count Webster v Arsenal and Maupay v Spurs, (though many wouldn't). He was involved in a Dacoure OG against Watford.

Trying to think whether there are any others?

Not having a pop you understand.

I just don't think all his creation has come to that much. A lot of it I will guess is terrific dead ball delivery which we (mostly Dunky) haven't done as well with as we should.

OK I've completely ballsed that up, I was certain I saw that stat on Monday night but I had had several pints at that point.... We have scored 24 goals this season, and Gross does have 14 assists in the premier league, since August 2017, which is twice as many as any other Brighton player in that time.... but obviously not this season alone. I did think that was strange..... :lolol:

Gross has also created more chances from set pieces in the entire premier league since August 2017, so yes, maybe we haven't done as well with as we should, but still two this season.

For the record I make it 5 assists and 1 goal this season from Gross, not a bad effort at all... Watford OG, Maupay v Spurs, Webster v Villa, Dunk v Man Utd, Maupay v Palace. Can't really give him Webster's at Arsenal but it was his corner. And obviously the screamer of a free kick against Everton. Although I think he's officially been given 3 assists, so I assume the OG and Spurs goals don't officially count.

Whatever, he makes so many chances I wouldn't drop him, he's currently playing like he did in our first prem season.

It was Trossard's (well-executed) first-time cross (from Bissouma's long pass) that set up Maupay vs Palace (with a Burn dummy thrown in for good measure). I see no reason why he shouldn't get the assist for the Watford OG (who else would?), and would need a decent explanation as to why he shouldn't for Maupay vs Spurs. So I make it four assists for this season (although I can't offer a view on who should be awarded an assist for Webster vs Arsenal).
