[Albion] Is Maupay any better than Sam Baldock

For me there’s no doubt. I really like Maupay, pleased with what he’s done so far and I’m confident there’s more to come. His movement, which doesn’t always get noticed, is excellent. His work rate can’t be faulted and he is a real nuisance for defenders. 4 goals is ok, we’d like a couple more at this point idealy, but he’s shown with 2 of those finishes in particular that he can do it and with more games and experience at this level he will only improve.

Funnily enough I remember having to defend Baldock on here from unfair stick in his first season too and by this point he only had 1 goal, in the Championship. That season he finished with 4 in total, the same that Maupay has by November.

He is stronger than Baldock and very good at using his body against defenders to make space. Often he makes intelligent runs and very often isn't picked out, so maybe it's a midfield problem. I've noticed a few times him delaying his run, especially with Solly, expecting a little through ball, then screaming for the pass to come and then for some inexplicable reason Solly stops and passes sideways. His finishing needs improvement but he's still youngish. It's his first Premier league season. Let's not give up on him yet.

He s not the only forward trying to make those runs
And the pass not arriving
big Jurg was always looking to get on the end of through balls
It’s why he looked so sulky and frustrated/ lazy
When they didn’t arrive
Kayal is a loss in this sense as he tended to play those forward passes risk of loss of possession be damned
But we have moved on
Going back to everybody’s favourite headless Labrador
How often did we play the ball down the channels
To play to his strength s
As said elsewhere we are a work in progress
And a darn sight better to watch than last year

Bit early to say...doesn’t look like Murray is in the plans these days and he is not an impact player...so therefore we are relying on a recent championship player and a very young Irish lad as our strike power....it appears Klopp has it right when he said, if we could convert our chances we would be a very good side.

It is alarming that you lose three games and you go from 8th and talking about better things, to if we lose at arsenal and results go against us this weekend we could be starting going into the Christmas period in the bottom three.

That is the worst piece of poetry I have read! What ever happened to poems that used to rhyme?

Barber and maresfield seagull out!

Purely my incompetence. I know how to spell in general but tend to type phonetically. It was on my tablet but not autocorrect as I have turned that off. It would have bugged me even more if I hadn't referenced it. I am so OCD about this stuff.

Makes great runs hardly ever gets the pass hence him going ballistic at Burn Saturday, wasn’t offside either at Anfield I’m guessing it would of been a good opportunity so the officials couldn’t have that and up goes the flag. VAR is meant to sort out the tight offsides although the rules probably don’t apply to little old Brighton

I think it also comes from not appreciating that the art of being a striker has changed over the past few years - a striker was originally judged solely on their scoring, but now we have seen that whilst yes, that's still a crucial part of the game it is about their overall contribution - creating space for others, holding the ball up, bringing team-mates into the attack - the game is no longer 'give it to the striker who will score' but more based around a team philosophy.

That said, I like Maupay - he does need to snatch less at chances but i guess it's more out of being desperate to score again - he's probably more aware of us that he could have scored more so far but its not a terrible return thus far. Keeping the faith, personally.

I knew that feeling on Saturday with the predictive text, a blessing but also a curse. [emoji2]

Maupay is better at missing sitters for sure.

This with bells on. Some of the sitters he has missed are embarrassing. He has had plenty of half decent chances also. Lots of running with no end product.
Only 22 which is promising though. At the moment he doesn't look a Premier league player. Not convinced by him yet.

A few points:

1. Is Maupay better than Baldock? Yes. Unequivocally. Baldock was a good player for us in the Championship, playing for a side that had a full flight Knockaert and scored loads of goals but has never been prolific. Maupay demonstrated last season that he could score goals in a decent but not spectacular side;

2. We will never sign a player that's ready made to score 20+ Premier League goals. We will have to grow them. Connelly and Maupay are both young and if in 2-5 years they develop as we hope, we could have some very good Premier League strikers on our hands. Look at the some of the PL top strikers this season for example: Vardy non-league/lower league until Leicester and grew into what he is now; Kane bang average on loan and then slowly grew into arguably the no. 1 England striker; Abraham, scored well at lower levels across several clubs before being given his chance at Chelsea;

3. Our issue, in my opinion, is rarely the strikers themselves. Locadia, Maupay, Connelly, Andone make countless runs that aren't picked up (Locadia in particular) and as a result always look worse than they are. Could Maupay be more clinical? Yes, but if he was, he wouldn't be at Brighton.

I sort of agree.

Personally I think the value in playing Maupay is to make opposing teams think twice about setting their defensive lines on the half way line. This (and to a lesser degree the new goal kick rule) is what is giving Alzate, Stephens, Propper etc the space they need to get their heads up and play through the midfield, it’s also giving Webster and Burn the space to carry the ball forwards and create overloads.

Maupay’s pace and movement is the single biggest change allowing us to play the way we are playing. Having this much space in the midfield was unthinkable last season (or certainly it was after Murray turned back after being 10 yards clear).

Well, the immediate difference is that one of them could only manage 11 goals in a team winning Promotion from the Championship whilst the other was popping in 25 in his second Championship season at an ordinary club, having hit 12 the season beforehand. Baldock was busy scoring just 15 goals across his first two Championship campaigns. One is clearly a better goalscorer at that level than the other.

But the reality is that in a few years time either Maupay will have kicked on and become a regular goalscorer at this level (which I suspect he will, when we improve the quality in certain areas of the team) or he'll be knocking in a handful of goals every season but being praised for his work rate and what else he brings to the team. You know a striker isn't a goalscorer when their defenders are talking about overall contribution, rather than the statistic which they're ultimately judged on.

Little hard on the lad some of them comments. He has 4 in 14 games and will get in and around double figures for his 1st PL season if he carries on at same rate which not that many players outside the normal top 6 clubs actually do. He’s missed some easy ons but he is at least getting in the right places to miss them. Would be more worried if he was not making or getting any chances. Overall I’ve been quite satisfied with his contribution, he’s still young and will get better as well.

Way better than Baldock and will get better, I like him.

Connelly is our no1 striker though for me.

I am surprised that GP and his team didnt go after Ollie McBurnie who joined Sheff Utd for £10m which is cheap for a proven striker.

Mousset would have been a better bet, after being crap at Bournemouth, speaking of which we certainly dodged a bullet letting them fork out for Solanke !
