Big points gaps in the Championship for promotion

Not really. Eight points is nowhere near eleven points. Had we been a further 3 points behind last season, the last match would have been meaningless.

It was eight points with a game in hand for Boro though, and we had made up the gap with a game to go. If Dunk had not been sent off in the final home match against Derby, we could have picked up three points and been ahead of Boro by the time of the last match.

I'm just being neurotic probably, as there are lots of potential banana skins ahead of us.

We're doomed.

But it was still just 8 points, not 11.

The best comparison is the Reading / West Ham one, but even that seems tenuous to me. That Reading side was better than their league position had suggested (they smashed us early in that season). Which of the two sides 11 points back are likely to do that to us? Huddersfield or Reading? Can't see either of them doing it myself, especially Reading who are just not good enough.

But it wasn't 11 points at all was it if they didn't win game in hand. Thread would've been more relevant this time last night! Appreciate the point though - do not count chickens yet etc..
ELEVEN points, ELEVEN points ahead with 19 games remaining?

When was the last time did a pursuing team catch up with such a gap in the Championship?

The answer is (sort of) last season.

Boro were 8 points ahead of the Albion with a game in hand at the same stage, but by the end of the season we were neck and neck with a match to go.

The story for the rest of the season isn't going to be about who can catch us / will we get caught, its going to be about whether we can be just the sixth side ever to get 100 points and whether we can win this division for the first time in our history.

But most of all it will be about Brighton's return to the top division :albion:

Nice explanation on the banning of Timothy.Made me laugh. 9/10

Thanks for highlighting this - just tracked it down and also had a good chuckle!

Me too. Had a proper CHORTLE at it. Of course it won't make the slightest bit of difference to his posts once he comes back.

We didn't catch up though - we were behind Middlesbrough after 27 games and stayed behind them at the end
Burnley did, and they overtook, so the point is that gaps can and have been closed.

No, a win would have done it if the GD was enough. But Burnley were last season's example of overtaking a points deficit.

Boro is quoted a lot, but don't forget there was alleged chair luzzing at training followed by Karanka storming out. This cost points for sure.

We know CH is a little more of a cool cucumber under pressure.

Agree totally about CH. Boro also spunked £9 million on a striker in Jordan Rhodes though, can't see us doing that.

In 2011/12, we (Reading) were 11 points off 1st placed West Ham after 27 games (we were 8th at the time), and we ended up winning the league.
Exactly. Wait for the eggs to hatch.

I hope by competitive you mean everyone is equally as bad as each other. Burnley would be ripping this league apart if they were still in it.
No. We were as good as Burnley for most of last year (eg, we were level on points with 2 games to go), and we'd have been 3 points ahead if it wasn't for poor refereeing in our game(s) against them. We're clearly better than last year, having added Murray up front and Duffy in defence.

If only Fulham had scored that bloody penalty
If only the ref hadn't given Reading a dodgy (soft in Stam's words) penalty in the first place.

We had to win 15 out of the last 19 games to catch them, so you'd be looking at a team hitting that sort of form from now on. Can't see it myself.

Wow, that is some going to win 15 of the last 19 to win the league. Not a massive fan of Reading but that was some going!

It will take an amazing set of results, but not impossible. The one side I can seeing doing something similar is Derby, think it may be just beyond them though.
