A free press is a crucial part of democracy, the state needs to be accountable. Otherwise you could have a government get power, and then control the press so that they never lose power again.

I think what we have now is the opposite. The press controling the government. Thatch, Bliar & Cameron were all Murdochs PM of choice.
I dont buy newspapers btw, not bought one for 20 years or so.
Why pay for someone elses opinion?

The front page of today's Daily Mail is even more astonishing.

Split half and half between, a story highlighting month long waiting lists for GP appointments, and a big leader on their cut out and keep guide on how to tactically vote to stop 'a class war zealot from destroying our economy and our nation'.

Amazing.

Public services are critically underfunded. Here's how to stop the one party getting in, who want to prevent them being cut further.

How could anyone be stupid enough to;

a. Produce this front page?
b. Read it, and want to follow their chosen path?

I would think that any person eating a sandwich can be made to look foolish at a given point. Just like frame by frame pics of people sneezing.

At least he didnt use a knife and fork

Oh God, don't tell me that come the hayfever season,we will have pics of Ed, sneezing everywhere.
Please don't give the press any ideas!

With all the money and all the resources these organs have behind them and this is all they've got.

Milliband owes these ********s nothing and that's why they are so scared of him.

Two words should be sufficient to justify it - Millie Dowler.
But what the NOTW did regarding the Milly Dowler case was illegal, so would regulation have made a difference? Regardless, I agree with sneakychef:
One isolated incident, no matter how abhorrent, is not enough to throw away the one way of holding a democracy to account.

People actually buy this shit?

You'd have to be a grade A moron to let a silly picture of a politician eating a sandwich sway your vote.

one way of holding a democracy to account.

I'd be more inclined to support you on this if I thought they did hold democracy to account rather than act out of self interest.

Hopefully this is the election where the print media has to realise it is a lot less powerful than it thinks it is.

Yet, the Scottish Sun supports the SNP.

Murdoch is clearly trying to create a situation of further tension between England and Scotland. What was that James Bond film with the mad billionaire media tycoon who tried to spark war between the UK and China?

I bet Murdoch watches that every night before bed....

What erks me is that his Dad was really a man of integrity. He risked himself carrying a letter to the prime minister and got arrested. Then he sent a true picture of gallipolli to then Aussue PM and was a major player in ending a farcical campaign. He would hate this stuff.

Might be an urban myth but it was reported that when Peter Mandelson was campaigning oop North, he once went into a Hartlepool chippie, ordered fish and chips and 'some of that avocado dip'. Or mushy peas to the rest of us

The hilarious thing is that a lot of very conservative minded jews are fuming about this - real nudge nudge stuff

Yes, it works on two levels. There's the mess he makes of eating the sandwich itself and then there's the fact it's bacon, with the subliminal caption - he's not only a jew, he's a bad jew. Dickens pulled the same trick with Fagin's sausages, so it's an old trick
