Just bumped into Peter Smith at my local work pub in the city. Asked him to play for my Tunbridge Wells Sunday side, but dont think he was too interested!!

Anyone got any good memories of the man?

I never really understood what happened to Peter Smith.

At the Goldy he was unbelievable, so brilliant, I remember the North Stand being full of rasta wigs in honour of him.

And then we went to Gillingham and sudddenly he was a clown and everyone was making fun of him.

xx

My overriding memory of Peter Smith is watching him running towards the north stand ball at feet, arms legs and dreadlocks all over the place, looking up to cross and then belting the ball onto the Old Shoreham Road. I used to love watching him but he was largely useless even at the Goldstone

He was one of the most overrated players ever to pull on an Albion shirt IMHO.

Complete pony and trap.

His legs appeared to be about four feet long, and he was about as talented as Johnny Crumplin Football Genius. However I liked watching him play, although he had the annoying habit (like Brooker) of taking on too many players and his dribbles always ended up with him being tackled when he took on one too many playters, or he ran out of pitch and cannoned off the South or North stand advertising boards. When did we last have a very talented right back?

Do you think I got off lightly then by him saying no to my Sunday league team??

I have got to say - I thought he was poor at the Goldstone and at Priestfield....

He was brilliant in his first season and then he just seemed to loose the plot completely!! Good entertainment though :lolol:

He was always shit. In fact the most technically inept player I have ever seen wear the stripes. He occasionally did something decent but that was usually becasue he didnt have a clue what he was doing so the defenders didnt have a chance.

I really liked the fella.

I used to work with his manager, John Williams, at Alma Swanley (the non-league club he used to play for before us). He used to fave about the fella.

I also knew a girl who went to colege with him, and I had a picture of him at a party smoking a spliff (before his Albion days of course). I always intended to get a t-shirt made up with it on the front, but always feared I'd get him into bother for it.

Very fast, but technically inept.

And phenomenally ugly.

I have this sort of non-specific memory of Peter Smith going on a long run down the right wing, the ball at no moment under control, yet somehow ploughing on past defender after defender with his ungainly turn of 'pace', aided by the odd lucky ricochet and missed tackle. Almost through sheer persistence he'd get to the byline - and then shin the cross into the North Stand.

He was working at a young girl in the pub - other than that, he was drinking at the Golden Fleece just off cheapside!!
