What I will probably do is wait until the New Year and see how the 4k TV prices are then. I'd guess prices are steadily dropping, so there will be a point at which I could get a good size 4k TV within my budget then.

I purchased this tv last week and for it's specs I believe it to be very good value for money. Great picture quality and a great looking unit. The only downside is that it cost me £599.99, ( Now £529.99 ) less than six days ago. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/2676834.htm

The announcement on the new models for 2015 is normally made by the leading manufacturers at CES in Vegas at the beginning of January. Prices will drop as the retailers will want to clear as much existing stock in readiness for the first of the new models hitting the stores mid year.

I'd like it to be a decent size (45-50 cm). The only other criteria is I'd like it to be no more than about £600 all in.

Good spot. The reviews said it was a bit meh but that hasn't put off people buying this set and saying it is the dogs ******** after they've played around with the settings.

I'm put off by the fact it's 4k, because we don't need 4k and it makes me think it's lacking somewhere else.

This TV also upscales BluRay and HD TV programmes to near UHD quality but isn't miraculous enough to make most of the music and shopping channels on Sky look decent.

Totally unnecessary IMO. Here's a chart as an example (if you have good eyesight, you need to sit within 6 feet of a 50" screen to be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 4k):

Samsung have the grip on the market right now. Personally I would visit Tesco, Currys etc and look at loads until you find a model you like. Make a note of it then visit Pricerunner website for best price. Places such as Hills of Hove will often try to match where they can AND they know what they are talking about.

Not only will Hills of Hove match the price but their customer service is first class,I have purchased two Sony TV`s over a two year period the second being a smart TV, I have no hesitation in recommending them.

I've seen the same sort of TVs for 100+ cheaper. Hold out/look out a bit longer. This seems a better deal, though it looks like it's sold out at the moment: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/lg-49ub820v-49-led-tv-smart-tv-ultra-hd-4k-599-pixmania-2052516

The higher the hot number, generally the better the deal.

LG, Samsung and Sony (though expensive) have the best reputation and is what I'd go for.

No, according to the chart I linked to, no human would see the difference between 1080p and 4k at that distance. In fact at 9 feet, you can only just tell the difference between 720p and 1080p (and I expect most people still couldn't tell).
