The only term I feel may be offensive is Paki, which is used by the unenlightened to classify any Indo/ Asian culture.

Don't forget that Whelan was defending Malky's use of the word when referring to Vincent Tan, a Malaysian. So it can be argued that it was being used similarly.

So none of you voting no have called the French 'frogs' or Italians 'Eye-ties'? Even when we stuff 'em at football? I can see nothing racist in either of those terms any more than the French calling us Les Rosbeufs (sic). 'Chinky' is just a lazy way of saying Chinese, to call it racist is overplaying it in my opinion and probably diminishes more serious forms of racism.

I'm going down the road to buy a chinese takeway. I also fancy a kebab from that kebab run by those turkish lads. I don't feel the need to label them as anything else.

Unless you're Chinese it's difficult to judge.......

I need to change my vote; I voted "no", but on reading HKFC's post, I realise I'm in exactly the same position. Last time I used it to describe a person was probably aged 11 or 12.

Me too.

Yes !
What's happened to freedom of speech ? Non existent now . What Whelan allegedly said is what most people say a lot of the time , the Jews are money grabbing people and good for them it has made many of them successful business people . Pathetic really even to be talking about it , but again someone who hasn't got anything to do notices it and makes it headline news .

Why is it we have to be careful what we say these days ? If someone called me fat , gay or a white ******* , I wouldn't give a damn , I would say something back not take them to court .

Why are we so sensitive ??? Why make a fuss ???

Rant over !

Try reading (or rereading) the Merchant of Venice for why the stereotype might be offensive, even if it's not intended to be. And the reasons for the holocaust included similar views.

And money-grabbing in itself is offensive. If someone described me in those terms, I wouldn't be impressed.

This is still a racial stereotype, and more importantly let's not forget Whelan said he did not think there was “a lot wrong” with anything Mackay had said, when plainly there was.

Of course it's a racial stereotype....there's nothing at all wrong with that. It's not derogatory FFS. You'll be suggesting next I can't say Brazilians are good footballers or the Welsh have wonderful choirs..... Or a million other different national attributes. :ffsparr:

Have you asked a Jew whether it's derogatory ?

I disagree. Whelan in saying Jews make good business people was trying to defend his own assertion that Jews love money. This was being said in defence of Malky's statement about a Jewish football agent's love of money which was derogatory in its intent.

Certainly whenever I've encountered any use of the racial stereotype of Jews loving money it has always been in a negative context. The Welsh and choirs? Brazilians and football? Hmm, not so much.

Unfortunately the politically correct people have the biggest say over and above the normal people, especially on here. How can it be more racist to describe someone following the jewish faith any more than catholics and protestants in Ireland , muslims or sikhs. It us just general terminology and generally no offense intended.

A lot of the old stereotypes still hang about....Frenchmen being smelly.....Jews being mean .....Englishmen having small dicks......we should all try and get on better, I say.

Is chinky actually derogatory or is it simply an abbreviation for chinese (takeaway) that in the last 10 years has been tarnished just because the abbreviation for Pakistani is used offensively? I've never heard anyone use it offensively, just as a shorthand colloquialism much the same as Paddy is for someone Irish (because it's short for Patrick and Podrig because it's such a common name.

Trying searching Google images for "paki's out".

(BTW, "Throwing a Paddy" is considered offensive.)

Absolute crap. Whether it is offensive is the sole prerogative of the person on the receiving end, so unless you are, in this case, Jewish, you can't determine whether it's offensive or not. Like it or not this is how it is seen in law so we all need to be a bit more respectful/careful than many of us used to be (and I also accept there will be those that will seek to gain maximum mileage out of it when it suits them)
