Saving money on the full new kit

That is also true! Although suspect that is nature rather than the nurture of not having a nice new full kit!

I'm a bit gobsmacked though that the socks and shorts are so readily available at such a cheaper price. I know we're not the only club that do this, but how can they justify the extra cost? Has anyone queried this with them?

I wonder if Nike set the rates?

I assume that those saving a tenner by making their own replica kits won't then be moaning when we can't afford to pay for a decent striker/midfielder/goalkeeper?

What's the betting the club will remove the iron on badge from the shop.

When you try to buy it, it tells you "We're sorry this product is not in stock", has done since last week.

Although its hard to justify hiking the prices up, if it helps to sign better players/pay for the stadium and training ground?

There should really be a sticky put on the board with links to the best deals on the kits. Would be a public service that could save people a decent amount of money. More to spend on beer and pies then.

I would agree if beer were drinkable from my seat! :drink:

I agree, I am such a tight ass. I mean, I am only paying £57 twice for my official home and away kit, with printing. How dare I save a little by making my own third shirt, which isnt even on sale :D

To be fair not everyone can afford to pay £45 for a shirt and we all know who the cheapskates will be when they have no cheap iron on sponsor :p

Unbelievably you can get the shorts here

http://www.discountfootballkits.com/Nike_Park_Knit_Royal_Blue-White_Football_Short

for £5.63, compared to the clubs £18 for junior shorts. That's a saving of £12.37 for the shorts, £4 for the socks. £16.37, if you get an iron on badge for £2.50, you've got the same shorts, same socks for £13.87 less.

The socks is a no brainer as they are exactly same, only difference on the shorts is the badge, but that's ironed on anyway!

They look different, surely different material or different stitching. The ones you linked look like standard cheap Nike shorts. Surely the Brighton ones are going to be of higher quality?

I really don't think so. The socks are exactly the same, and pretty sure the shorts are too.

I wonder if people moaned back in the early '80s when the British Caledonian Adidas kit was launched ?

Shorts and socks were standard Adidas, no club badge.

Hmm. Can't help but feel that the overall effect would be that of the Blue Peter Tracy Island and that your kids could TELL

Good point. And that kit was a classic. No one moaned about it being a template kit (if there were moans, it was the fact it was not striped). I have no problem with a template kit - main thing is whether the template looks good or not.

You have a point, but......

This just goes to show the rip off that is going on, and the Albion are far from being the worst out there.

The third choice orange kit, on clearance out there at £14.99, meaning it has cost the retailer what, say £12.50, or maybe being sold at cost? Now let's add the badges and sponsors logos, volume is important here. Club crest, Championship badges, Amex sponsorship graphic multiplied by 10,000, maybe 15,000, cannot cost more than a fiver per shirt in those numbers. Let's now add another fiver for the cost of applying them, remember this is being done in the far east at the point of manufacture so it costs far less than this in reality, we are now up to £24.99.

The Albion now sell this item to you and I for £45, not a bad mark up that, other clubs will be charging even higher figures, £55/60 in some cases. These figures do include VAT so in reality, if these figures were correct then Albion would be making £16.68, and the clubs charging the higher figure could be making £29.18, now that is taking the pxxs!

See, I've been thinking about this quite a bit... and I think DO have a problem with template kits and Nike in general.

If these manufacturers want to make their millions out of football fans (and their kids) by charging 45 quid a pop, then they should have to work for it IMO. Nike seem to adopt the Letting Agent model of "the less work I have to do, the better."

You can buy two of our shirts for £15 each in lots of places. Why the hell should the club and Nike expect us to pay 3 times as much for us to have a stuck on badge and a bloody great big (uncomfortable) advert on the front? It just does not make sense. I think Barber is a smart cookie, he knows this, so I'm betting he's pulled out all of the stops to get them to make our home shirt unique. No other team outside the Premier League (as far as I know) have got any customisation on their Nike shirts at all. As a result, I have no problem with that shirt (except the design). You cannot buy the same thing anywhere else, £45 is expensive for a pretty bad kit, but it's unique. One of a kind. Our shirt.

At least with Errea, they tried to design us a kit every year. Even if they were ill-fitting and in some cases pretty ugly. We were paying for something. Now, we're not. It's a totally different marketing model. Smaller manufacturers have to rely on designing a good kit that people want to buy. Nike don't have to, simply because they are Nike. We're just cogs in a huge marketing deal and I don't like that.

"Hmm. I'm not sure I like the huge slap on logo, could we maybe break up the stripes?"
"Costs too much sorry. Anyway, they'll lap it up because it's got a swoosh on the front, we don't need to try!"
"But why is the swoosh black? It looks rub.."
"IT DOESN'T MATTER, IT'S A SWOOSH!"
"Oh ok.. Wait, isn't this QPR's away ki.."
"I SAID THEY'LL LOVE IT!!"
- Record breaking pre-orders
- Best selling Albion shirt ever
- Profit
"This model works! Let's stick with it!"

In defence of the club here, I agree that £45 for a template shirt is a lot.

Having said that, it has been worked out above that the clubs mark up is around £16-£17 after VAT and the application of club crest and sponsor. This mark up falls even further when you take into account the fact that only being a fairly small retailer (one shop and an online shop), the clubs overheads are higher than online retailers and Sports Direct (the club can hardly replicate the 'pile them high, sell them cheap' model).

I'm not defending the club against the high prices, nor am I criticising those making their own DIY shirts. Nevertheless, I think there is a bit of naivity by some on this thread. The fact is that the club sells shirts in order to make a profit - if the shirts didn't make a profit, the club wouldn't sell them.

When you go abroad do you spend the first three days looking for a bank that offers the best exchange rate or pub that sells the cheapest beer?

I spend 3min doing the former - you know, online.
