4 of which were against Moldova and San Marino.

Oh, I didn't realise those don't count. And obviously he contributes nothing else to the team either.

OK he's clearly no Michael Owen, but we are where we are with this squad. Welbeck has speed, experience and also vital experience of tournament football. I wish we were in a position to shrug our shoulders at losing the likes of Welbeck on the eve of the tournament, but at the moment, the fact is we're not.

I hope its not something that keeps him out of any game, because all it does is reduce our options, which are sparse enough as it is.

Who should be in the squad instead that can do the same job as him?

And be flown over to Brazil within the next day or so to potentially be involved against Italy on Saturday, having been on a beach for the last month.

Answers on a postcard.

Welbeck will work hard in a Milner type way, which in a game we cant lose isnt a bad thing.

Barkley is a brilliant footballer, but doesnt really work in a role and wont track back as much and Stirling the same.

I agree both are better footballers, but neither are as good as team players.

Lets go with your option then, hopefully I will come back Sunday and say yep you were right.

Yeah does seems bit weird to gloat about a member of our team being injured, first I'm Brighton and then England and i want them both to do well

Welbeck is vastly overrated, wouldn't be any where near the England squad if he didn't play for Man United.

God I hate posts like this.

No, he wouldn't be any where near the England squad if he didn't play for Man United, because he wouldn't be Danny Welbeck would he?

Danny Welbeck does play for Man United. Danny Welbeck does start for England. Therefore, Danny Welbeck must be pretty good.

Quite. And that Lionel Messi or Ronaldo - they're only called the world's best players because they play for Barca and Real. :dunce:

There is a reason he is part of a team that won the league at a canter barely a year ago. I wonder which English striker playing for Stoke, Norwich, West Brom or Palace is being CRUELLY left out of the squad in favour of shithouse Danny Welbeck.

I can't believe Roy left (ex) Southampton striker Lambert at home after the season he's just had. If he had been playing for Man Utd he'd...
...oh.

Opinions of the player aside, I think everyone can agree we could of had much better players injured instead.

I think it's a shame - and he's a better player in an England shirt than for ManUre. We'll miss his defensive nous more than his striking abilities, that's for sure.

Bit of a silly argument to make. If Welbeck was at Sunderland he wouldn't be in the squad, even if his current ability was exactly the same. He's very average, and may in the future be a decent Premier League striker, but as it stands he's currently piggybacking off the name of his club.

You've even proved my point by saying "Welbeck does play for Man United... Therefore Welbeck must be pretty good", but more than just current ability is taken into account when United sign a player. So his club shouldn't affect his chances of making the England squad.

Wasnt he picked for England whilst on loan at Sunderland?

and again, who would you pick ahead of Welbeck who can do the same job?

I don't dislike him actually, (although l do hate Man Utd), for me he does his best work out wide, or when playing deep, rather than being deployed as an out and out striker. Either way, as others suggest, l think we will miss him in the searing heat of Brazil. Lets hope he recovers.

It's not Welbeck's fault he's not Gary Lineker or Alan Shearer, Jimmy Greaves or any of the other former greats. He's been selected because he's been one of the best 4-5 English strikers in the country based on form and merit in the last couple of years. I don't see any other forward who has been cruelly denied a spot despite scoring an absolute hatful of goals.

We're there in Brazil, we have a chance and Welbeck will do his best for his country. What is the point in being negative about it?
