I'm only guessing here, but maybe at least some of the people to whom you refer were not so much envious of those who were "successful" under Thatcher, as angry on behalf of those whose communities and livelihoods were destroyed by Thatcher's divisive policies?

You guess right on my behalf.

What, as insulting and disrespectful as having street parties and getting ding dong the witch is dead to No.1 when Thatcher died. Those that did this, give the rest of us a glimpse of them as individuals and their psyche and in that one action alone they showed to many their "degree of envy". Envious of those who were succesful under Thatcher (of which there were millions, as that is why she won 3 elections) and didn't feel the need to revel in her passing away......What sort of person parites when someone dies??? How disrespectful is that to Thatcher's children and grandchildren?

Given some of the drivel on here I often wonder if some of you Tory types are a little envious of successful left-wingers?

There are a lot of champagne socialists about, I'll give you that. It's very easy to champion the plight of the poor and underprivileged while being comfortably well off oneself. One of the things that I did admire Bob Crow for, though, was that despite being able to afford to live in luxury, he chose to stay in a council house. No pretensions there.

So by living in that council house he deprived somebody else who perhaps had greater need ? .. is that socialism ?

I think you'll find with the way council houses are allocated these days, a Romanian family would be levered in before the removal van was turning the corner. At least he paid the rent.

Not denying he didnt pay the rent but he still denied that asset to perhaps a more deserving case

Are you saying (and defending those that did) that it is ok to have a party when someone dies?

In respect of the rest after 23 years of her not having a single iota of power how does she still effect them? How is she relevant at all now in their lives. Why haven't/don't/can't they move on, like everyone else and instead celebrate with parties another human beings demise. Is there anything more disrespectful?

This... "from each according to his ability to each according to their needs".

Bob Crow had the ability to live in his own house, bought and paid for with his substantial salary. As a socialist it was his DUTY to use his ability in this way and free up the house to someone in greater need.

though he did like to dine at the clubs in London, and go to top hotels in exotic location. the funny thing is, and this is the point often missed about his residential arrangement, i could afford to do the same if i had bugger all rent to pay. but bless his socialist cottons for preserving some of his working class roots.

But you can't blame him, the council/ housing association is to blame, a council or housing association house/flat should really be given to people on low incomes.

This rubbish about street parties when maggie died is getting ridiculous. There were hardly any but of course those that were were reported widely by some of the press!

From the housing association/council point of view they wouldn't want their asset systematically destroyed by a "problem" family. So his partner and 4 children are not considered a deserving case now to continue with the tenancy ?

No. I was simply challenging your assumption that they were necessarily driven by envy. I suspect it's more complex than that, and many other motives, including anger, for the reasons I suggested, may have been involved.
Personally I wouldn't have a party when someone dies (although I have been to some good wakes), but I'm not that bothered or surprised that a few people did; she did after all inspire a lot of long-lasting hatred.
Anyway I tend to think that "having respect for the dead" is a bit daft, to be honest - I'd much rather be shown respect, and compassion while I'm alive.

Where do you see this "degree of envy?" Do you believe it is the case for the majority/significant number of left voters? I am with soistes on this; it is insulting and disrespectful. I know Labour supporters from all walks of life and varying backgrounds and current positions. The only consistent label I can assign to them is Labour supporters. To suggest they all walk around in threadbare elbow patched jumpers and are mainly envious of wealth would be totally inaccurate.

Tub,I said a degree of envy in certain sections of the Left and I stand by that statement.Hard to be sure how many, but I dare say more than the number of rabid ,baby eating, entirely selfish toffs on the Tory side of the argument.
Anyway, moving on from envy;is it a slight whiff of smug righteousness that I am beginning to detect from some leftie postings?
Surely not.What an outrageous thought!

How about Bob Crow's words when he heard of the death of Thatcher..."May she rot in Hell"!....be careful what you wish for...

I'm not convinced he said this. He publicly said he would not be mourning her death but this is very different.

council housing is not emergency accommodation. i think people get a little confused on this. there is no reason at all you cannot be financially stable and live in council housing (or at least that was the original plan).

there are some mad views on this on this site, i just suppose its because we have moved so far from the original ideal that people dont really get it. sad i guess.
