Line 4, "There is no obvious captain in this team " so we need to look to someone who is a shrewd captain who could make the step up to Test Cricket. Maybe Gale at Yorkshire or even going back to Chris Read at Notts. but, I'm sure there are several good candidates who can come with fresh ideas.

Rule no.1 of modern cricket. The captain MUST be worth his place in the team on merit regardless of his cricket brain.

I think it's the coach who's going to be the fall guy here. Giles is being groomed. Flower's had a great run and we have plenty to be grateful to him for but I think it's the end of the road for him unless we somehow pull off the great escape here.

I think it's a natural time for Flower to go. Remember he recently had treatment for skin cancer, and he's also made it clear he wants to spend more time with his grandkids, reading between the lines I rekon he wanted to jack it in when that happened but the ECB persuaded him to stick around for this Ashes series and give time for Giles to bed in as one day coach.

There is nothing that can really be done at this point in time. We don't have enough players in the squad to replace all those who are out of form. We should let the next 3 Tests play out and see what occurs. Some players may bounce back yet but some may say that they have had enough of touring and Test cricket and jump before they are pushed. Looks like we may have to take a 5-0 on the chin then rebuild with whats left after the fall out.

At least we have Brazil 2014 to look forward to

Don't underestimate the potential impact of the players knowing/suspecting that. I know it shouldn't make a difference but they aren't robots.

I'm with you - it's no time to be chucking people in for the sake of it. Give these guys the time to sort it out. I'm not sure we'll lose 5-0 either, Melbourne and especially Sydney are normally kind to us.

Whilst clearly we haven't pulled up any trees in Adelaide over the past few days luck has a lot to do with it, the toss was always going to be important, but on that first day if the dropped catches of Haddin and Clarke early on in their epic innings had been held its a different game.
In our first innings Bell didn't look troubled, Carberry fell to a wonder catch, whilst everything else was collapsing around them.
Obviously there are the core group of Aussies, the type with the 'Stuart Broad is a sh** bloke' t shirts who a baying for a 5 nil, but Ive chatted at a number of locals who think its still up for grabs.
Again at Perth the toss is pivotal, along with apparently the direction of the famous Perth wind, yes if it's behind Johnson it will be an advantage, but one very informed local told me last night it can also work for Anderson if he's bowling into it, Broad and possibly Finn, Bresnan or Temlett could make it work in their favour. Some informed and coherent locals think England are actually now at their most dangerous, Cook will come again, and the 2nd Innings at Adelaide will have given the likes of Pieterson, Root and Prior a lot of confidence. At the resturant we went to yesterday, I got talking to what someone we would describe back home as a blazer, South Australia and Australian Cricket Board member, he felt there was a groundswell opinion from the old guard establishment out here that, bizarrely fuelled by Ian Chappell of all people, that Johnson had gone too far with his antics and would get spoken to prior to Perth.
I still think, with that little bit of luck and good fortune, we can win in Perth.

Really!? Even with those two held they'd have likely got 300+ if not more assuming that was a sufficient lift in our team to get their tail (which there wasn't in the first test). Not sure where I see that being relevant given we can't really get over 200.

In our first innings Bell didn't look troubled, Carberry fell to a wonder catch, whilst everything else was collapsing around them.

Carberry was out LBW first evening which had it been reviewed would have been out - we were lucky with that one. Carberry never really looked comfortable and Bell then got out to a pie chucker the 2nd innings.

I'll have a pint of what he's having please!!!

England's record in Perth.
P12 W1 D3 L8

England's last win in Perth - 1978

England's last 4 visits starting with the most recent:

Lost - by 267 runs
Lost - by 206 runs
Lost - by an innings and 48 runs
Lost - by 7 wickets

This is remembering that in 2010, with our team in great form, especially with the bat, we got 187 & 123. It's going to need a miracle.

I imagine a lot of Englishmen, with the quite bizarre odds the bookies are offering, have put quite a lot of money on Australia winning in Perth, which can only mean one thing... An England victory!

Finn MUST play at the Gabba in my opinion, I'd go with:

Cook
Carberry
Root
Pietersen
Bell
Bairstow
Prior
Broad
Swann
Finn
Anderson

Fair Dinkum, mate, you speak the truth. The focus has to be on winning at Perth and nothing else. It can definitely happen. The only slight quibble I have is that the Perth wind is a Freemantle wind, hence it's name 'The Freemantle Doctor'.

No post mortem till after Perth. Cook may yet become one of the all time Ashes heroes. He may not, as well, but lets wait till the 3rd Test is decided. When is the start? Is it 2.30am Friday morning over here? Early to bed Thursday.

Australia were 69-5 on the First Day before the old Mitchell Johnson had one of his, for then, rare good Tests with first bat then ball . This year he is due a bad Test.
Hull beat Liverpool last week for the first time ever.

We're going to need more than just Johnson having a bad test I can assure you of that.

The Fremantle Doctor isn't going to help us score 400 runs first innings though, that's what we need as a benchmark minimum in order to have any leverage in the game. Even then the Aussies can probably match that and some.

Why do we have to have back to back Ashes series ? It looks like we will have to wait 4 YEARS for a chance to win the Urn back. Wouldn't an Ashes series every 2 years be a lot more sencible ?

I wouldn't right now, because that could destroy him more than this actual series will.

But as a completely left field creative thinking, I'd chuck it to KP.

Yes, the man that text the opposition taking the piss out of his own team mates.

Yes, the man that often bats for himself and not the team or situation.

It would be a ridiculous gamble, but it may just release Cook to concentrate on his batting, and may just give KP the kick up the backside he needs. Batting at no.4 he is ideally placed for the role, and deep down is a very keen thinker about the game.

It would be mad to do it, but it is the only alternative option I can see. It would be the kind of thing Sir Alex Ferguson would do if he were running this England set up.

F*** me!

This would be the all time greatest management decision in any sport ever, if it came off. I as one of KP's staunchest defenders would say the fact that you are considering only demonstrates the paucity of options we have available to us.

He was hardly a roaring success in his first spell either....

There was a bit of scrambling of the fixtures as in order to comply with world ranking shenanigans we have to play every one of the ranked nations home and away every 4 years I think. That is then coupled with the problem that we traditionally play a 5 Test series against Australia ( Used to be 5 against India and the West Indies too ). So we get this bizzare schedule where we have to try to cram it in in order to fulfill different tours. Just checked and we play 5 again at home against India for the first time in a while and prior to that, 2 against Sri Lanka.

The good news is that they have realised the mistake and it won't happen again.. oh, unless it's financially viable !

We play them in Feb 2015 in first round of first 5 day World Cup with 14 teams competing. Not the Ashes but in Melbourne. I can't find any info on England fixtures after the West Indies next winter. Anyone know?

I know we played these 10 consecutive ashes tests purely for money and if Australia hadn't pulled their socks up at home it would have been an anti-climax.
