I've noticed since we started playing good passing football (generally) I have become less engrossed in televised games. They make good background noise, but they don't hold my attention like they used to.

It's easier for a striker in that role to get forward when facing a team 109 places below you in the fifa rankings. It's also easier when you have one of the country's best left backs behind you not needing your support.

Got a little confused with someone referring to it as 'the Barnes role' - where the left back thing is often an explanation needing someone with defensive qualities who can also get into the of as a supporting striker, not just someone running up the wing and crossing it it.

But if we had a left winger in that role, playing on the wing, no one would have come inside to score like welbeck did. In fact, his skills as a striker were probably a huge part in why he got those goals from that position.

If we had a left winger on the wing, Welbeck wouldn't have been on the pitch, or he would have been occupying the space that lambert was if he was moved into that strikers role and lambert on the bench with a left winger on the left wing.

I didn't take you for the sort of fan with "traditional" interpretation of rigid roles in football formations and tactics.

I don't get all the anti-Welbeck stuff, at best people seem to damn him with faint praise and at worse they completely slag him off. Ok he's not the new Maradonna but by English standards he is genuinely good, plus Hodgson gets the best out of him. (But then Hodgson is a good manager). Also hopefully, unlike Rooney, he'll get better as he gets older.

Welbeck through the middle on both occasions he scored from. That is where a striker should be, not poncing about on the left wing. Simple stuff isn't it?

So what are you complaining about? It's not as if Hodgson stuck him on the left and told him not to move more than a yard in from the touchline and just concentrate on getting crosses in for Lambert. There's currently an element of fluidity about England that's been lacking for decades. Welbeck no more played a traditional 'left wing' role than Joe Hart did.

I agree. It just seems like its a popular opinion to slag him off. 8 goals in 18 internationals for a 22 year old often played out of position is a very good return.

Agree with all of this. Despite the obvious handicap of being a Man Yoo player, I've always thought he was pretty decent.

Wouldn't be surprised to see Barkley in for Wellbeck with Gerrard being pushed further forward. I thought Barkley looked excellent when he came on, and Woy will look to protect our fragile back-four
