OK first minor disaster we fly out to JFK and back to Newark and I booked an airport transfer to hotel in Queens (no schoolboy jokes please) so does anyone have a rough idea what a cab might cost from there to Newark airport ?

Probably $100 inc tip. You'll get stung either way, as it'll be a Manhattan cab going out of NY, into NJ.

Just get cab or subway to Penn station, the overland train goes straight to Newark airport from there, easy 30 min journey, we did it several times when they were doing flights out of Bristol to Newark.... $15 each, much cheaper than cab.

Not according to Amtrak it is $99 for a 20 minute train journey for 3 people, I thought train fares were only steep in the UK !

Excellent, we will have plenty of time as flight is not till 22:00 hrs
If you get to the airport early enough to have a meal, there is a fantastic steak restaurant in Newark Airport....top top quality at good prices considering it is in the airport. Gallaghers I think its called. Otherwise use Stout just over the road from Penn Station, great food great atmosphere, should end your trip with a bang.

Go to watch the New York Rangers ice hockey if you get a chance.

Also there is a fantastic pizza parlour underneath the Brooklyn side of Brooklyn Bridge.

Yep – a bad day in New York will always beat a good day in London.

Hmmm not sure I agree with that.

I've been maybe 15/16 times (a lot with work) and have just come back. IMO once you have done all the sights it's pretty much similar to London......just with far worse sports/rude people/more expensive(manhattan is a rip off)/bad tv.... In fact the only thing I think I would swap is Central Park for Hyde park !!

...and I don't get all this stuff people say about shopping being a lot better over there? What can you get in NYC that you can't get in London ?

Grimaldis - arguably the best pizza in NYC/the world.

Walk across the bridge, buy a pizza to go and sit by the water looking back at Manhattan as you munch.

Then go to the nearby http://www.brooklynicecreamfactory.com/ and get an ice cream to eat on your walk back over to Manhattan.

You'll have a great few hours.
