Are there a limited number of places? If so then fair enough, but otherwise you're potentially putting off people who might not feel confident in making that commitment.

About 40. We have to set some sort of target and I don't think £ 250 per person is too unreasonable. 40 x £ 250 = £ 10000.

Even if they raise a tenner it is better than nothing.

To be fair there will be a fee of about £20 each to do it anyway, so if people can't commit to raising a bit of cash I doubt they will commit to paying £20 either.

I'm in, but I'll be stunned if I can get anywhere near £250 sponsorship. Sorry, but I don't want to build up any unrealistic expectations there.

That's not what you asked though, which is why people are seeking clarification...

We are setting a target of £ 250. A Target.

You do see that telling people they must commit to raising at least £250 and telling them they should target raising £250 are two completely different things, right?

It's good it's been clarified now, though, hopefully the revised criteria will attract more people to take part.

Is this likely to be a group of regular riders who like to go a decent pace or more of a social for those who like to stop at the odd pub, or will there be opportunity for both ? Is the idea that everyone stays pretty much in one group for safety ? Ta.

This is in no way supposed to be a race, or any sort of pace setting exercise. The way I envisage it (and as I am arranging it I guess this is how it will be) is that we have a couple of planned stops in place (and there is no reason at all why these shouldn't be at a pub) and aim to cover 8-10 miles each hour. That should mean a total time of between 7-9 hours (depending on how long is spent in the pub) which should be a pace that most can manage.

There will be support vehicles on hand (we already have 3 volunteered) to run water about or to help those who may be struggling, and of course we will have some insurance and also a few of the fitter riders can whiz back and forth a bit to make sure all are OK.

All of this will come out in the planning, which will be done very soon. At the moment we are just looking for commitment on this page, and for there to be an attempt at a bit of fundraising. As soon as we have a decent number I will collect email addresses off of everybody, and then circulate around a full plan with stops built in, information on water breaks etc and then things should start to come to life.

All input would be graciously received prior and after this of course.

Bozza and all,

Apologies that this was not clear from the start. The idea is to try and raise as much money for REMF as possible. Fundraising is hard, especially if you don't live in the Brighton area (like me) so struggle to get people excited about a charity that pretty much only works in Croydon and Brighton.

Fundraising though Just Giving has made things a lot easier though. If you are keen set up a Just Giving page (see the link in my signature for an example) and then email everybody you have ever met asking for sponsorship. In my experience, it takes a few reminder emails to get people going, but all you really need is £10 from 25 friendly people, and you are at £250 easily. Also Just Giving links to Facebook, so you can use that to try and lever a bit of support also.

Forget about targets and how much money is needed per person. As long as each person does there best to try and raise a little, we will get some money (which is better than none), have a great day riding out of the doldrums of Croydon to the beauty of the Amex, maybe sample an ale of two on route, and at the end of it all have some hard earned sponsorship to give to REMF.

Come on people this is a great cause and one which (if you can spare the time) would be a fantastic to support.

Very helpful KLF.

Perhaps if people haven't got anything positive to add to this thread, they should not post on it.

All we are trying to do here is raise some money for a great Charity. Please do not turn this thread into having a go at any one particular person, or a binfest (to use the terminology).
