QUESTION for REMF Organizing Committee and anyone who is attending Friday

I didn't realise that, great effort.

This is the problem when the same players play each year. They can't ask the same people every year for sponsorship for simply playing a football match

We tried auctioning off places in the squad a few years ago and there was almost a complete new squad and if I remember correctly it was one of the worst amounts raised by a REMF squad for a long time because the people involved just wanted to play and didn't really make a huge effort to raise money apart from a few.

In this years squad there are 3 new people, 3 people who made their first appearance last year and one the year before that and there will be more new faces next year as well.

The people who have been in the squad for a few years have all raised loads of money for the REMF, more than a lot of people that are moaning about it.

Perhaps Bry and Commander would like to organise the team and sponsorship next year, with the apparant ease that they would get to £10k I for one would be delighted for it to happen...

I didn't say it would be easy, it's not meant to be easy. But at the moment you have raised a grand total of £137 each! I'm fairly sure I could beat (smash) that if I organised it.

There must be huge interest in people wanting to play in a match at the Dripping Pan against Palace with Peter Ward in the side, I know I'd love to. And we get 28,000 gates these days, out of those people there must be a thousand or so reasonable footballers who would love to play. I understand you don't want a load of wealthy fat men buying themselves a place and the Brighton team getting hammered, but you could set up some trials, say anyone is welcome to come along, I'm sure you'd get 50 people or so, and from that you whittle it down to say 25. Then you tell each player that they have to pledge a certain amount of money that they can raise through sponsorship, with a minimum amount of say £500, and you pick the 16 people who pledge the most. And if somebody can't hit their target then they lose their pace in the squad to the next highest pledger, or they cough up the money themselves. You have a year to organise it, there's no reason why it couldn't be done like that, and then there's a minimum of 8 grand made.

The REMF is meant to be about making money for charity, first and foremost. Yet I doubt many of the new and returning fans at the Amex know what it is, otherwise I think you'd get a lot more people attending the games, and a lot more people wanting to play. I know I've never heard it mentioned by random people in the ground, apart from by the cliquey old Withdean lot in Dick's.

I know you're just saying it to get a reaction but quite frankly, that's ridiculous. I doubt any REMF team ever, will raise £8-10k just from the players.

500 pound per person is not ridiculous in the slightest. To be honest it is a fairly easy target especially for what is, in all fairness, a big Sussex sporting charity event. Sorry to be critical but I do not think you make the most of your situation; you could and should be a huge Sussex charity organisation by now.

I've just noticed that the match fees have gone on to the just giving page this year. Good idea, you get the gift aid on them then. So if we deduct the £300 that raised and the £400 from ITFirst and Brighton & Hove Jobs, we're left with a grand total of £93 per player. £93.

Each player should have their own just giving page and each player should be accountable for sponsorship money individually, surely? If I'm missing something here then someone please tell me and I'll shut up.

In fact, we can knock another £450 off that from the chair auction, which means the players have actually raised £64 each.

This year it has been on the screen at two games and there was a piece in the Programme. There have been posters up around the Amex as well. Short of speaking to each fan individually I am not sure what else can be done?

As for you SMASHING what we have raised... Like I said, I look forward to you running the team next year and raising £10k for the REMF.

I dont know the exact details but I think he sorts his own flights out.

It is all courtesy of the boys at Holmesdale Radio, so the commentary will have a Palace bias but should be entertaining, especially as they have more to drink and if things don't go their way

I agree. But in terms of money generated it is not particularly huge...and after all this is the aim of the organisation. It is also at an advantage to many other charities in that it is linked to the football club and with this comes many ready made donors and contacts. On this latter point, via the football club and its fan base there is probably only 2 degrees of seperation between REMF and almost anything/anyone in the county. I have said before it has the potential to be absolutely huge. The Brighton marathon is not exploited properly; much more could be raised from this if it was done properly. I have previously fully explained to Uncle Spielberg how it works but the advise has never been acted on. Another person has also done the same. On this point REMF should also be organising a 10k/half marathon. There are a few charities running Brighton 10ks and half marathons now. I realise I am coming across as mean as I know the REMF put a lot of effort in but it really needs to go to the next level...and it can.
