Why, oh why, does anyone have an Amex card? Is purely some sort of status thing, or do some people gain some benefit from them?

Biggest card issuer in the world, lots of benefits, and later this year, Barclaycard will be issuing an Amex network cards later this year

Based on experience or hearsay?

Again, experience or hearsay?

Personal experience albeit from about 10 years ago  I had a corporate AMEX card but found it was rarely accepted. Strangely I really struggled in the US (Philly).

Amex is now accepted in 75/80% of establishments I reckon.

Good for accumulating Virgin/BA miles (not that they are easily usable, mind).

If you ever need to contact them for whatever reason, you get to speak to someone in a call centre in Brighton, not Mumbai.
That's very true I got put straight through to the Brighton branch and got to speak to Abdul Singh

In my case, experience.

American Express charged a small fortune for each transaction (around £4.50), compared to debit and other credit card companies (about 59p).

OK, let me clarify, it wasn't 'terrible', I didn't have to accept it - so I didn't.

That's because your burgeoing empire didn't do enough business

As a punter what does an AMEX card give me over other debit/charge/credit cards? All I know about AMEX cards is that they cannot be used in that many places, so what is it that makes people have them?

There's no credit limit, so you can spend whatever you want each month (as long as you pay it off in full at the end of the month).

You can tell the corporate drones on here a mile off. I remember head office made a statement a few years ago to say that it is not their policy to sponsor sports teams, but since we are doing well and they can guarantee that at least 30k people every week will see their logo, they seem to have changed their tact. Not entirely enamoured with the idea considering they consistently make Brighton citizens redundant every 4 years without fail, in favour of moving jobs to South America and India, and IMO they are more interested in employing multilingual Europeans than locals. Either way, they have done a lot for the city in the past, so good luck to them. It's better than NOBO anyway.

Average Amex spend per transaction is DOUBLE that of Visa & MasterCard.
All the restaurants in Plymouth years ago made a call to all withdraw from accepting Amex. They kept all the punters spending £30 BUT lost many of the £60 punters. It took them 3 months to work out the maths that £55 net was better than £29 net and they ALL started taking Amex again...

Big brands attract big brands according to Paul Barber. This deal is massive in reducing the 8million loss, and is higher profile than a lot of top level teams.

Everything off the pitch is moving this club towards the Premier League. Win all our next 12, and we'll be there next year

I would guess my Amex is accepted in about 80% of the places I try to use it, accounting for over 90% of my spending.

My card issuer gives me a paired Visa card for when the Amex is not accepted.

I use a Virgin Atlantic Amex and I earn enough miles for either free flights or significant discounts on cash fares.

As I stated earlier, Amex want 7% from me for every transaction - no maximum. Diners Club want 10%. With VISA/Mastercard, the cheapest I can get is 3.5% on Credit Cards and 1.75% on Debit Cards. Bank charges here are extortionate, but Amex and Diners are taking the micky.

Those figures are way off european figures and do not make any sort of sense to me. As Vegas Seagull mentioned earlier, the spend through Amex is more than double of a visa / mastercard transaction.

As a multinational company, you can surely see the benefit of employing multilingual employees? Just so happens that most young Europeans have made the effort to learn English in addition to their first language. I'm sure they'd employ a multilingual English person as much as a foreigner.

That's as maybe, but I have only ever lost 1 sale in 7 years through not taking Amex, and that was from an American tourist who only bought his Amex card with him on holiday and was regretting it as quite of lot of places he went to did not accept it. Everyone else just pulls out their VISA card and we carry on. We struggle by as a merchant anyway, so why should we pay double the charge to Amex for doing exactly the same thing as VISA/Mastercard? It is not as if it costs them twice as much to process the transaction.
