Dawkins is a smug cock and does not help the debate, but as a fervent atheist I don't mock those who choose to believe in an almighty in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Live and let live.

Totally. I can't stand Dawkins. Let people believe what they want.

May I suggest Nibble if you hadn't spent all that time on NSC with your 11,000+ posts, then you could of read all the Bible studied it and found out what a wonderful series of books there are in the bible. You would of found the real christian values.

Unlike the senders of those emails.

I have read and studied the bible in depth, at my school we had no choice. I think people are missing the point somewhat. I'm not declaring some love of Dawkins, or a hatred of Christians I found it somewhat amusing that Christians are sending death threats, Simple as that. I think I overestimated some on here by not putting some long explanantion at the start of the thread instead I merely posted the video and allowed some to make of it what they will. I clearly didn't count on the idiocy and childishness of some on here. Please find it in your hearts to forgive me.

I agree with much of what dawkins writes in "The God Delusion" - I'm an agnostic myself but we should always be tolerant of other views - In the heat of debate Mr dawkins often isn't I'm afraid.

He is rather sneering towards religious folks. I saw a couple of his programmes that focused on science and ignored his usual insulting of the religious, was very good.

Some people believe women are inferior and it's okay to drive planes into buildings. I think it's dangerous to let people believe what they want without questioning things.

Dawkins may be a tad smug, but pointing out the absurdities of religion is fair game in my eyes.

And, away from NSC yourself, er, 'topbanana', you might have read something of English grammar and found out that 'would of' and 'could of' are the sure marks of an illiterate.

It's a little bit hypocritical when he fails to point out or even acknowledge the absurdities of atheism though.

What are the absurdities of atheism?

… But back to your point. The Bible is indeed a wonderful series of stories. But stories full of contradictions that handily enable the believer to cherry-pick which ever passage suits the needs of the moment. So 'thou shalt not kill' sits uneasily with Jesus' recommendation that child-hair-harmers should have a millstone hung around their neck before being promptly drowned. In the Old Testament, the mere eating of shellfish is enough to deserve capital punishment. And so on…

An entertaining read for sure, but then so are the works of Hans Christian Andersen.

Absolutely Nibble, otherwise I am making a mockery of what I believe. :)

This really wasn't an attack on Christianity, I just found the video interesting. As in all belief systems there are shortsighted folks such as Christians who send death threats, goes against my understanding of Christianity. I'm a humanist but have no problem with people of faith. For example someone having faith and having that faith enrich their and others lives can only be a good thing. People of faith who hold banners saying Death to Fags etc, or emailing death threats to people, that I do have a problem with. Foe exmple this family on Really channel right now that Louis Theroux is visiting. Religion at it's most hateful and bonkers!

Atheist claims such as that life is meaningless, humanity is purposeless, morality is a man-made concept, consciousness is an illusion and other nihilistic and irrational belief systems based on absolutely no evidence but the assumptions derived from the idea that God does not exist, is what makes atheism absurd.

*Atheism is a broad term, not all of those absurdities will apply to all atheists. They do however apply to Dawkins, nihilistic wanker that he is.

Life is meaningless? Well yes it is... What does Christianity say the meaning of life is? What's the grand plan? The sad truth is that millions of people devote their lives to a fairy tale made up centuries ago - and hence miss out on the beauty of nature itself.

In terms of morality being man-made, no Darwinist would say that - so that's nonsense. Dawkins says humans have evolved to the point where morality is built into the mind. That's not man-made - it's nature.

Unfortunately, creationists seem to think that if science can't prove something, it means the only alternative is God... The reality is science just hasn't proved it yet - but it will.
