I stopped drinking 10 years ago and don't regret it for a second.

I'm quitting this year too. Gave up for 6 months a couple of years back and felt great. Still going to go to pubs because I love the good ones. After the first couple of visits it's pretty easy if you have some decent will power to tap into. As with many things, I find meditation helps a lot.

My wife says I make bad decisions when drunk, so to prove her wrong I agreed to not drink for 2013.

Not quite sure how it all came about as I was drunk at the time I agreed.

Guess she has a point :)

erm, quite. do you only make decisions when drunk? there's no control in this experiment, i reckon all you will able to prove is that you can make bad decision when sober too.

I'm intending to seriously cut down, so just the once a week for me which shall be a friday night piss up.

Er, make that twice a week, every other week, or if im going to away games, I don't think I could go to a football game and not drink,

But in all honesty it sounds very tempting, I'm awake but I'm horizontal on the sofa still feeling just as drunk as I did last night with that horrible alcohol taste in my mouth despite brushing my teeth several times already today, I shall probably start my hangover tomorrow on my first day back at work since the 21st. I can't wait.

Yep. Going into pubs and ordering a lemonade or coke is still seen as strange by bar staff in pubs. They make you feel as if you've just been beemed down from another planet.

I asked for a non alcoholic ginger beer when I was driving once. They looked at me as if they didn't have the product... I was like 'that one, in the fridge down there!'...

Plus they charge you enough for a coke these days! It's outrageous!

Good luck, hope it inspires others.

I went from the last match last season, to the first match this season without a drink and felt brilliant, lost a stone and gained a load of money, I even got used to ordering a Coke in a pub, something I never thought i would be able to do.

It all fell apart once the season started.

Usually two reasons for cutting out booze; a) to lose some weight or b) serious over drinking issue [maybe both]

For me its a) and so for several years now my New Years Resolution has been to abstain from chocolate and beer - not alcohol completely, still allowed the odd glass of wine but no beer or cider.

The key to making this achievable is that its not for ever, only until EASTER.

Fairly regularly.

Wine in week. Few lunchtime beers if in London.

Beers on Brighton home games.

Most of my socialising is done whilst boozing.

Gonna be a challenge for sure

I gave up last New Years Eve as was bordering an alcoholic! Not had one since and a year to the day a new me was born. Fitter, healthier, lighter, less bloated, no hangovers. Obviously you need to fill that void so I now cycle, head to the gym and admire the new me............Not even bothered about pubs or beer anymore. I will say that it has not been easy and at times i have wanted to start having the odd one here or there but never ever got around to it.......Do miss the home brew though!!!!!

Good luck.

Stopped drinking more than 3 years ago. First 3 months were tough then just didn't really think about it after that.
Now enjoy a good German non-alcoholic beer every now and then.

I really do like the thought of giving up drinking, but i know I will struggle, however i would never of thought I would give up smoking and I did, so nothing is impossible I guess. I probably drink 1 bottle of wine or 4 cans of lager a night.

I used to drink it all. now no booze this jan for 7 yrs now, never felt better pysically and mentally, your just have to avoid pubs and don't buy any. you're probably lose 98 percent of your so called friends but is a great way to find out who your real mates are. you will have a great deal more cash in your pocket feel better and live longer,it's not easy but worth it.

If you don't mind me asking how much did you use to drink?

I probably drink 1 bottle of wine or 4 cans of lager a night.

I wouldn't be able to function properly drinking this each and every day.

Am packing in drinking for 2013.

Has anybody ever done anything like this themselves?

Reckon its gonna be quite a challenge.

Why do you have to totally give up drinking? Can you not just show a bit of restraint and cut down on the amount you drink? I very rarely drink to excess now, but I would hate to deny myself the pleasure of a glass of wine with a meal, or a cold cider on a warm day.

I usually have a dry January and February each year.......as others have said -it's the reaction of others that makes it harder.... some people can't seem to understand why you would want to do such a thing!......

I had nine dry months for medical reasons a couple of years ago and after a while it didn't bother me. It's nice to be back having a drink now though.

I stopped drinking mid 1994. Drinking alcohol and living in such a depressing location doesn't mix.
