Even better six Merlin engines if all three planes were flying in formation.........presumably the Battle of Britain flight? Superb.

I love the quote about that last flying Lancaster, something along the lines of: 'a million rivets all flying in close formation'

but for them I doubt a lot of us would be here

You're so right.

We should have let the Germans come over and bomb the shit out of us

If someone attacked me, and I defended myself with a weapon, say a knife, I would not then look upon that knife with feelings of wonder and awe.

I would look upon it with feelings of regret and sadness. Not regret that I defended myself, just regret that I had too, and that I had to at the expense of the life of another.

The romantic view this country has towards war and militarism, I find it quite disturbing to be honest.

this country was fighting for its very existance against a state that wanted to wipe us out and I have pride that those men who piloted these planes were there for us all

The vast majority of the men that fought in the war felt exactly the same way but those machines did save our country and are no longer killing machines but items of history.

It's not a romantic view of militarism, it's a recognition of phenomenal bits of engineering, the success of which made all the difference as to whether we were able to defend ourselves or not.

And it's also a tribute to the high numbers of them which didn't come back.
