It does seem strange in these times that something that big can still hit something - I know sandbanks drift etc. but surely we have the technology. Also, it seems their emergency procedures were not up to scratch - as soon as the boat listed, they had difficulty launching the lifeboats - I think there will be lots of questions after this one.

It's crazy. I assume the fatalities were those that jumped in the water in the panic and drowned. Very sad.

As an aside, I have never seen the attraction of a cruise ship.

I notice there are now adverts on here for cruises. Perhaps not.

I did wonder that, but one of the crew said stuff was flying all over the place inside the ship, so they could have just been unlucky.

I sort of can - in fact we went on a cruise when we were kids and it was ok. I can see why people wouldn't fancy it, but it's like a floating hotel with the occassional excursion. Not sure I'd do it now though.

I guess that is where I would fail. Not a great fan of hotels/vast hotels. Certainly not having organised tours and being told when one can and can't leave.

Oh yes. I didn't realise it listed quite so suddenly and dramatically.

Princess cruises are advertising at the bottom with 'escape completely'...

to be fair when a ship lists to either side lifeboat launching straight from the davits is going to be difficult, but you're very right in saying that the emergency procedures weren't up to scratch...did one woman mention that they skipped a safety drill? Unless it was only missed because of what happened, naturally, you'd have thought a safety drill would be around noon..

I also agree with what you said about the sand banks..they do have radar imagery, plus the reef markers on their charts to check for drifts or shoals.

Maybe the officers on the bridge had a 'titanic complex' and trusted too much in the ship being 'perfect' as opposed to their own skill.

Can someone please explain why the ship was so close to the shoreline ?

I may have this wrong, but as I understand it, they had already hit a sandbank and subequently the captain tried to get into the port at Giglio, so was heading for the harbour. It is a very small island though, the number of stranded passengers now outnumber the islands residents.

Sorry? They managed to evacuate and save 4000 people and you say there proceedures are not up to stratch! I think they did bloody well. It might not have gone that smoothly, but its a huge effort to evacuate a ship of that size. It could have been much worse.

Would the port have been big enough ?

Very sad and I imagine lots of Lloyds syndicate managers logging into today to assess their liabilities.
