Why is it so very close to the shore or has it just drifted into shore ?

Its good Seamanship. If your ship is sinking a good tatic is to head for shallow water to run it agound before it goes under. One report suggests it was an hour or two from hitting the rock to capsizing

At Leebrook
I doubt the port would have been big enough - A look on Google earth sugests a couple of berths for Rollon roll off ferries but not much room for a large cruise ship. However still a good place to head for as it improves the chances for the life boats and would be nearer rescue services.

Also Unlikely to be Captian's error, Officers do most of the Navigation, still some one fecked up, although captain is ultimatly responsible.

When you look a pictures of cruise ship they look so unstable to top heavy.

They have huge stabilisers that look like aeroplane wings under the water.

What we don't understand is how they didn't know exactly how many was on board.....you have to swipe your cruise card to get on and off....security is rediculously tight

You would like to think that cruise ships and ferries operating in European waters would be pretty much state of the art and have competent crews but the current Italian incident and previous disasters like Zeebrugge show just how human error is a factor. Both incidents happened within sight of land.

The 'Scandinavian Star' is another classic case (see wikipedia for a precis). The Captain and poorly trained crew were prosecuted for abandoning the burning ship whilst passengers were still onboard.

Many of the new mega cruise ships have up to 5000 passengers and 1500 'crew' many of who would not speak English - might seem a recipe for potential disaster trying to safely evacuate such a vessel, especially if hundreds of miles offshore and remote from prompt assistance.

Can someone please explain why the ship was so close to the shoreline ?

Indeed, this is the probable cause. The picture shows it only 40-ish yards offshore, anyone with half a brain must have have realised a ship like that drawing 20ft plus, was in severe danger ?

It travelled 3 miles with the gash in the side.

Now in Cruises there are latest technologies are used on it for safety. On my recent trip of Dubai Dhow Cruise that was amazing full of safety instruments luxury cruises are on Dubai ports.

I think you need a shipping forum looking at your posts.i'm sure there's some good ones.
