OT Pub for lunch in Nutley

Having received good advice regarding the best of the two pubs in Cowfold for my walking group a couple of weeks back, I thought I would ask the same question about Nutley.

There'll be about ten of us for Sunday lunch and a couple of beers. The route we're taking passes right by the William IV which I can recall as being very good for toasted sandwiches in the 60s (and the landlord's daughter, Mandy, was lovely!)... but now?

Up the road is the Nutley Arms.

Any thoughts on which is the best ... or which to avoid?

Based on the advice I got from NSC we went to the other pub in Cowfold. As it happened it was Beer Festival day and also a good lunch.

Its the only pub in Nutley. There is a pizzeria and an indian restaurant also though.

I think the William IV has been re-named the Nutley Arms.

What happened to the Shelley Arms ? Used to travel up there to see punk and hardcore bands back in the day. Or is that now the Nutley Arms prior to being the William IV .

Thank you. Just looked on Google Maps photo thingy and there is the pub I always knew as Willian IV with a new name, The Nutley Arms.

So I guess that answers my question as to where to eat. Pub-wise in Nutley it's there or nowhere!

We went to the Nutley Arms for my mother's birthday meal a few years ago and weren't that impressed. It had the atmosphere of a downmarket Blackpool hotel. The only place I could recommend would be the Coach and Horses at Danehill, which is on the back road between Danehill and Chelwood Gate. We aren't very well off for decent pubs in this part of Sussex. You could try the Hatch Inn on the road between Wych Cross and Hartfield, though that is expensive. Alternatively, there are a couple of pubs in Hartfield. The Hay Wagon is supposed to be good.

My wife and I both worked in the Shelley Arms back in the mid-eighties, and in the Little Chef that was joined on to it, happy days!!!

If you used to go up there and see bands, do you remember Pig and the Truffle Eaters, they were hilarious. The busiest night ever in there was when Cutting Crew played, it was just as Died in Your Arms hit the charts, the only reason they played was because the lead singer was from Nutley.

The Shelley Arms and Little Chef are long gone I'm afraid, the whole area has been converted to houses.

The food in The Hatch Inn is very good, but as WHS says it is a bit more expensive than your average pub.
If you want food , but no alcohol, try the Duddleswell tea rooms, their lunches are excellent.

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys, but the walk we are doing, the Sussex Diamond Way, runs right by the Nutley Arms so my question was merely about the choice of pubs in Nutley. Obviously there isn't a choice, so the Nutley Arms it is. For a bunch of walkers unless it's very bad we'll manage!

Brings back memories from the 80's. Didn't the William IV have a giant chess set in the front garden. Used to go there after a day in Ashdown Forest.

He had a company called 'Shag Talent Productions' which was emblazoned on the shirts of Nutley FC for a season or two if my memory serves.

Back in those days it was a well known place for drugs.

The shelley arms closed in about 1994 only got to go there for a few years, was only bout 19 when it closed. Was legendary tho, a dingy den of iniquity. First time i went there were people doing lines of coke off one of the tables. Saw the meteors and captain sensible play there and me and my friends in our band got to do a couple of amatuerish gigs there too just before it closed. Shame it had to go
