Queen's visit to Dublin

Haven't seen a thread on this specifically, but what do we all think? Personally I think it's great that the two nations, European partners after all, want to build bridges and make the 21st century a better era in Anglo-Irish relations. No one's saying the past should be forgotten, but neither does it have to be constantly re-created. The general view from the republic (perhaps MYOB can confirm) seems to be favourable overall with the caveat that we haven't quite yet 'solved' Northern Ireland.

However I haven't heard anything from Ulster, especially the Unionists. I know we've got a few on here who sympathise with the Unionists - so how do you feel about the Queen paying her (and our) respects to fallen Republicans?

Lets be honest, there are republicans and republicans, havent got a real problem with 1916 era IRA , but would have a major problem with her paying respects to the modern era scumbags.

I don't think NI will ever be "quite yet solved" until there is a democratic concensus across NI to join a united Ireland, however that is 2 or 3 generations away, probably more. Until then, we seem to have a working settlement in place, and this is probably as good a time as any to normalise relations.

I very much doubt we'll see the Queen pay the respect of people like Bobby Sands, bushy, any more than she will visiting any other contentious graves such as the 14 dead innocents from the Bloody Sunday massacre.

Hope HM's visit gets an ok reception - and this shows how the terrorists are out of touch.

She can look the locals in the eyes 'cos she lost a member of her family during the troubles.

Perhaps not a good time for Prince Phillip to dust off his book of Irish jokes.

Agreed mate, I cant visit Bristol without an overwhelming sense of shame at my great-great-great-great-great-great grandfathers involvement in the slave trade.
