I would slyly relish Southampton staying down. It's more a dislike for moneybag-teams i have. I am sure we will be one soon and i'm going to have to just find a reason to justify the overspending. Thanks for the well wishes from the saints fan. I wish we could go back to the old days with this rivalry shit. What I mean by that is that there seems to be lots of younger members and a few older ones, who seem to have all but forgotten that PALARCE are our rivals far more than the saints. All my life in the north stand I cannot remember us singing anti saints songs unless we were playing them. That said I would still rather Hudds came up with us, as I have family there and it's much easier to say to the wife "lets go up to see you're mum" then by the time we are halfway up the M1, suddenly proclaim that the Albion are up there too. What a strange coincidence.

Funny thing most of the people around Selhurst way have forgotten about Albion, could be because apart from about three or four seasons you haven't been at the Palace level much since the late 1980's. No doubt your imminent resumption of the fixture is the reason behind your attempt to whip things up again.

I agree. I think it's slightly embarrassing the way people go on about a 'rivalry' with a club that we've barely played in the last twenty-odd years because they've been bigger and better than us. It's a bit like Scotland claiming to be rivals with England; in fact it's worse than that as England and Scotland have always been ancient rivals whereas Brighton and Palace were barely aware of each others existence before 1975.

Maybe it'll change if you lot stay up and Southampton don't go up. Then we can go back to the 'old(ish) days'.

The Portsmouth v Southampton rivalry has a far more solid basis than Brighton and Palace. The two cities are rival ports, that rivalry spilled into football and it's always been there. I'm not sure how old you are but prior to at the very earliest 1975 Brighton and Palace didn't give a toss about each other; indeed if you'd asked me then who our rivals were I'd probably have said Bournemouth. Southampton and Portsmouth had been rivals for decades at that point.

Given that the rivalry is so shallow-rooted I am genuinely surprised it has lasted so long, especially given the disparity between the two clubs for most of that period. However I've no doubt that if you did a 'rivals' poll Palace would win by a country mile - whether Palace still feel quite so strongly is a moot point given Danny-Boy's post above.

With regard to a potential permanent rivalry with Southampton I'm not totally discounting it but sadly, despite what I've said, I don't think it'll really happen to be honest. We'll always be at best 'second rivals' as nothing will take the place of Portsmouth. However they ARE our rivals this season; they're local, they've got a gobby twat for a manager and lairy ex-players of ours. I have found it quite amusing to read all the almost pro-Southampton posts on here ranging from "I quite like them actually" to "Why are there all these anti-Saints threads? They're not our rivals!" The latter posts are almost made with a hint of desperation as if the posters know that the rivalry with Palace WILL die unless it's constantly nurtured.

So all the while people keep saying "Southampton aren't our rivals!" I'll be saying "Oh yes they are actually!" Put me on ignore if you don't like it.

It felt pretty strong at our first visit to Selhurst for that game (can't remember the score). From both sides.

I do quite like them. Partly due to the my enemies enemy sentiment. Partly because the Dell was a good place for an away trip, and partly due to this:

So even if Adkins is a gobby twat and some of their fans on here are frankly an embarrassment, and trying to forget the Blackpool promotion stitch-up (and that FA cup match) - they are a fairly harmless lot.

It would however be funny to see them miss out in the play-offs. But if they are a rival (other than in a friendly sense) it will only last while we are competitors.

As another older fan, I'm with you here. My take was that Spurs were the club who really did the dirty on us and snatched the third place.

Gotta admit, he seemed quite pleasant in that interview. I think, from his comments, he insinuated that the comment he made in November was an attempt at trying to get under our skin...which worked...as had happened with his time at Scunny when they won the league, but obviously, as with Scunny, the team hasn't let it get to them, and as Dicker said, motivated them.

I don't know, but I like them a lot more now. Seeing their training session, it seemed a fun place...not too against them coming up with us (as long as they are in second )

It was just about mathematically impossible for Saints to have missed out on promotion. If Spurs won that game 3 nil, Brighton would have to have put 6 goals past Blackpool, to have been promoted instead of Southampton. All Saints had to do was win that final game to have been champions. It was quite obviously a fit up.
Maybe McMennamy & Burkinshaw were mates, I think they were both Geordies.
