Its grim up north

When I first moved north west I was often accused of being Australian. Admittedly this was to Warrington and at the height of Neighbours popularity, but still one hell of an insult.

You'll find that a lot of people north of Watford Gap will say that. However, unlike Americans calling most English people Australian I would say that to them we do sound like cockneys.

I recently did a thread on NSC called Living in Liverpool. Having been born and bred in Brighton I moved to Liverpool in 1988 to do go to University. I've lived in L8 (toxteth) now for nearly 20 years and the locals are friendly, funny and helpful. Yes, Liverpool has plenty of social issues but Liverpool is in my opinion a great city trying, like many northern towns and cities to reinvent itself fter the collapse of local industry. It always surprises me when people make sweeping statements about people or places that they have never visited or lived in. Liverpool is amazing place to live.

Surely saying that "the locals are friendly, funny and helpful" is every bit as much of a sweeping statement as saying they're self-pitying, unfunny or whatever?

What about those of us who have lived there then ? I found them friendly enough yes but they seem to have a different work ethic to down here. I had a similar feeling recently having provided support for a firm in Liverpool as well. I might add that the people who worked for the same firm complained frequently about their Liverpudlian colleagues as well. It;s also fair to say that whilst Scousers are supposed to be great comedians that's a myth too as a lot of them are miserable sods. However given a choice of Liverpool or Leeds I's sooner be west of the Pennines any day.
