The Hungry Years

[Laughing Gravy]

On the way home tonight i was stuck at the pier roundabout and i just happened to gaze over at Charles St bar.

I found myself drifting back to the late 70s and the good old Hungry years and all my old pals.
What a place that was.
Typical Friday eve.

Start off in Shades then up to the Bath arms. A few in The Alhambra (how many remember that place) then off to the years to do my box for a few hours.

They had a reunion party at the Brighton centre a couple of weeks ago a friend of mine went, said it was a great night.

Was frequently at the Years and the Alhambra around end of 75 to early 77, when punk took over and I was more frequently at the Buccaneer or the Vaults (or the reggae place down West St, whose name I've forgotten)

Years was good fun, although I do remember being exceedingly pissed off on NYE 1976 when the DJ played Al Stewart's The Year of the Cat several times - it was a pony song and hearing it several times didn't make it better. I think I only went to the Years once more after that.

Ah, the Hungry Years, where I learnt so many important social skills that would stand me in good stead for the rest of my life. How to get an order in at the bar when they couldn't hear you; how to play air guitar.

But, yes, the Friday nights were brilliant.

It has made an old-ish man very happy seeing this thread. Used to come down to the "years" a lot from Tunbridge Wells early '80's, the only "disco" that played consistently decent music. Everyone just seemed to be there to have a good time, amongst the biker types once I remember seeing a party in full evening dress and ball gowns having a jolly good headbang one evening.

Never forget driving home from there the back way via Cooksbridge late one windy night. A tree had fallen down across the road and stuck the other side of it was a coach full of folks in fancy dress all the better for drink! One of them in full Viking regalia attempted to hack the trunk with his plastic sword. The Police arrived with much merriment and shouts of "look, here's special Branch" and gamely offered to supervise whilst the tree was lifted out of the way.

Me too - less. The Alhambra and add a couple of other Lanes or St James's Street pubs. It was the Mods v Rockers thread that reminded me of the years a couple of days ago. Does anyone remember chucking Martin about - we called it Dwarf Throwing - although he wasn't actually a dwarf.
