If enough of us say the same thing its the truth:tosser:
Why the wanker smiley? I've been really polite and patient with you and tried to answer your question. You're going to have to face it though, you are never going to be satisfied. The Cup Final was nearly THIRTY YEARS ago. No one from that era is connected with the club any more and the records have long been destroyed. Therefore the club cannot do what you want them to do and make a definitive statement so that we can 'go into the Falmer with a clean sheet' (or whatever it was you said). And even if they did - you probably wouldn't believe them anyway. I'm not sure how old you are, but if you remember 1983 and the years before and after and you weren't paying attention at the time (and you obviously weren't) then sadly your stubborness will prevent you from ever knowing the truth.

Probably best that you go one believing that Mike Bamber stole it, or Jimmy Melia spent it all on shoes, or whatever you want to believe. The rest of us will look to the future.

In those days it wasn't about money and how much you'd get.It was about the grandeur of competing for what John Vinnicombe described as the most precious prize in sport. The FA Cup Final in those days was the only live match on TV at all in England. (apart from England matches) It was the most anticipated game of the whole season the League was a poor second to the cup in those days. As a 14 year old having bought my first junior season ticket with my paper round money in August 1982 and living about a mile from the Goldstone it was Boys Own stuff indeed and still in the top 5 experiences of my life......so far!

As revealed by Tony 0898 Millard at the first ever Gulls Eye dinner in Jan 1989 a large part of the cup final money went on bonuses.

The squad of 15, including Keiran O Regan and Perry Digweed, each got £15,000 for the final and the same for the replay, which amounts to nearly half a million quid before Jimmy Melia took his 'bit' as well.

I always thought The players had it written into their contracts that if the club ever played in a major final or one the league championship all money made from such an event would be divided equally between the playing squad. Now the Albion did attract some top players in those days!

I am sure Vinnicombe metioned this once.

Great Minds Harty.

Yeah, it's already been mentioned on here that bonuses took up a large part. Won't satisy 'Return of the Rev' though, just because we're all saying it doesn't make it fact ...

Interestingly I have a mate that still has the bonus sheet for that season, he was a pro at the club at the time and although the figures seem quite high for that period, it was nowhere near £15,000 per game, nowhere near !!!!

Even if you accrued all the bonuses round by round the figure does not come near to the £30,000 mentioned.

Divide by 6 and you might get the actual figure if they won the game, when they lost it was nearer £2500 per player.

Actually I will ask him to dig it out again.

All I know is what Tony told us that night at Chapmans in front of I believe a number of people who post on here.

The Wembley squad, so the 12 for the first game, Fozzie, O Regan and Digweed received £15,000 each for both games, ie 30grand in total, and a grand squad total of £450,000.

Millard may not be everybodies cup of tea, but he's a pro at what he does, so the last thing I think he would do is stand up in front of a room full of fanzine readers and either start unfounded rumours or lie.

I do not think that Tony Millard would try to impress or lie to you or anyone else.

However at times he was the 'butt' of many of the teams jokes and was dominated by some within that first team squad, but that's another issue.

All I can say is that I have seen the bonus sheet for that season, I felt the numbers were quite high for that period, but I can promise you the official bonuses which were signed and agreed prior to the season start was nothing like the figures you are saying.

There were rumours of tickets being sold on, but that seemed the norm back in the day, but players officially receiving £30,000 for the 2 games is way off the mark.

Now I havent seen that sheet for many months although I will have another look, but I am sure that winning and appearance fee's added up to £5000 per player and something like £2500 if they lost, even that seemed quite high to me for the 80's.

It was also interesting that the League bonuses seemed generous too, up in the high hundreds if we got a win on top of their fairly lucrative salaries whilst sitting in the top 3 with a diminishing amount depending on League positions !!!

But then again we were playing up until that season in the top league and were not frightened to compete financially.

Worthing
I don't actually care where it went.

As far as I'm concerned, Mike Bamber was entitled do what ever he wanted with it. After all, it was his club, and his money.

He took a gamble with his own money to get us where he did, and therefore would have been entitled to some sort of return.

He never once meant to f*** us over, if you chopped his legs in half you would have seen blue & white stripes.

God bless you Mike.

How is Mike Ring these days anyway?

Is that a punt at whose bonus sheet I have seen, nope.

I wont tell either, I am not trying to be controversial here, just saying that the £30,000 is way off the mark.

If you think about it, that would of been an obscene amount for 1983 and wholly an unnecessary bonus amount to offer players at the time.

The £5000 still seems generous to me and likely to be in line with the bigger clubs in the competition at the time.

Ok so where did it go?

What money ? Like today we got 35% of the gate. Actually once voucher ans season ticket claimants took their share Bamber did sadly offer United most of the remainder, probably why the voucher system was introduced in the first place. If you mean that money, then only a handful of people know. It was apparent on the day there were a lot of United in our end and many reports of United fans with tickets stamped BHAFC. Euphoria took over and no one who had a ticket cared less.

I think the 83 cup final money never existed in the terms you and others think and as someone else said kept the wolf from the door for a couple of years.

In 1983 £30,000 would have bought you a decent property in Brighton or Hove
Graham Moseley has property in Hove. As (did) Perry Digweed and Neil Smillie.

Whoooah. The Albion played Real Madrid in 1983! Shamed to say it, but this I did not know. What was the background of this?

I wonder who are the current holders of the Townsend Thoresen Cup....

how about the mid season friendly Albion versus AS Roma Olympic Stadium Rome, approx 1981/82.
