Very difficult given the general demeanour of the crowd to expect anyone to totally "keep their cool" no matter how much training they have. It seems in all the circumstances to be reasonable that he has escaped a guilty verdict but not unreasonable that he will probably be disciplined and his continuing career as a police officer is quite possibly going to be limited.

I do find it difficult to empathise with people who abuse the police and either practice or mimic violence whilst feigning surprise when they are the victims of a violent response. It's an ugly aspect of a "free" society that their behaviour in flagrantly taunting and threatening those responsible for upholding the law is deemed acceptable.

I still don't understand why if someone was threatening you with a weapon in each hand you'd hit them in the thigh with your truncheon? He's either lying or incredibly badly trained

But in the same way if Police practice aggressive policing surely they've got to expect aggression back?

What experience have you had of public order training ? you've obviously had some to be commenting on this officer's training, or lack of it so to speak.

PS for the record , i hope the copper who pushed over ian tomlinson gets the book thrown at him.

Think about it, he believes the soap dodger has a weapon, like a knife, he is hardly likely to try and grab at it is he? Of course not, because he has been trained that if you try to grab a knife you might lop off some fingers. So he attempts to incapacitate her by hitting her legs so that she goes down, as per his training, and the training of every police force in the world, once someone is on the floor you can control them far more easily than if they are standing.

Well I would have assumed that disarming the person would have been the first thing which he'd have used the truncheon to hit the weapon out of her hand. Or hit on the lower half of the leg if he wanted to incapitate someone?

I'd think the thigh would be one of the least effective places to hit someone unless you just wanted to hurt them in a fairly concealed manner?

It's all a load of bullshit.

She was acting like a c**t.

He decided to twat her a few times because he thought he could easily get away with it, but didn't rekon on someone filming it.

Copper uses the policemans get out of jail free card - he thought she had a weapon.

Protester tries to get compo by bleating about the incident.

What a waste of everyones time.

I don't know the reason, but it's standard prictice to hit the thigh or back of the legs. That's not just over here, it's accross europe. I've seen it loads of times, and had the bruises to prove it.

Maybe you're right, but in the heat of the moment, lower leg? upper leg? Either way, it had the desired effect. Then again, surely, the reason you hit them with your stick is to hurt them sufficiently so that they comply with your commands.

The courts have cleared him, they said "there was no evidence that his use of the baton was not approved, correct or measured". So that means he was following the training and guidance he's been given. You say he was badly trained, based on your personal opinion. But based on the Polices opinion, and the opinion of the Judge his training is obviously correct and he has followed it correctly. Why are you so convinced his training is "incredibly bad", when the law believes the opposite?

Perhaps we should wait for one of our NSC resident members of the Police to provide us with a clearer insight.

or, at an educated guess, the aim is to immobilise the attacker and/or get them to the floor where they pose the least threat. you have a choice: give a dead leg or smack them over the head. one is inherently more dangerous than the other. which do you think the police are trained to do?

personally, i think he was up for a ruck, but then she gave him plenty of excuse. she'd have move if politly asked? bollocks, the film shows her well up for a ruck too, little different to pwoper nawty types.

That's what they're supposed to do, it's to disable the person not knock them out. Ask Edna, they do the least damage hitting the thigh and the idea is to make the person fall down. Would you prefer it if the Police aimed for the head ?
