Shawcross has been rewarded for his impressive performances in the centre of Stoke's defence this season despite being sent off against Arsenal on Saturday evening.

The 22-year-old, uncapped at international level, reportedly left the Britannia Stadium in tears after being red carded for a sickening challenge on Aaron Ramsey.

Capello and trusted assistant Franco Baldini even delayed the announcement of their squad by 40 minutes to have one last discussion about Shawcross' presence given the severity of the injury Ramsey is thought to have suffered.

Heskey.

Only because he's done sod all for Aston Villa whereas Agbonlahor scores regularly and isn't in the squad. I find that very harsh, and I'd be annoyed in Agbonlahor's position.

I'm glad Shawcross makes the squad, he deserves to. One tackle shouldn't change anything about him. Quality centre back and going to be playing in the Premier League for years to come.

Shame Zamora got injured right at the last minute.

I can't believe there is no call up for Bobby.

Bit of a bittersweet day for Shawcross!

Bobby injured.

Tell me, mr Clay, as a brusing centre half, can you sympathise with Shawcross? I can imagine you've caused an injury or two in your time, just with your size and strength. As the nippier type of player myself, I feel for Ramsey. But this is football, a game played by all shapes and sizes of people.

I cant believe people actually thought he'd get a call up, and were/are just blinded by the fact that he's an albion hero.

I don't think it's that. It's because he's had a far more impressive season than Heskey or C Cole, and these friendlies are surely the time you look at players on the fringes and see if they have something more to offer than the current crop.

Without the injury, I think he was in with a VERY good chance.

Ah right, that would make sense then. Didn't know he was injured!

I do feel a bit of sympathy with Shawcross, it's one of those things that just appeared to be a bit of a freak injury. Everyone mis-times tackles or can go in a little higher than anticipated. On another day that would have harmlessly skimmed off his shin pad and no one would have made much of it! Seemed he got a bit of a nudge off Bentner as he was going in for the tackle which would obviously make a difference as well.

Are you still playing on Sunday evenings? My Sunday league side should finish in a month or so and I wouldn't mind playing the odd game if needed.

I would not panic about this squad. I too am a bit disappointed that Downing is in and A.Young is not, C.Cole is in and Agbonlahor is not........but........Cappello is trying out some players. I doubt the World Cup squad will look like this one.

They should pick that bloke that plays for Stoke who takes long throw ins. Every time I see him lob one in the box, Stoke score.

Nothing too wrong with that squad. Downing must be 3rd choice on the left behind Gerrard & Milner. He did also play very well against Germany remember, so I'm sure that's influenced Capello's decision.

Shame Bobby got injured. It's down to Crouch & Cole for the backup target man spot I would suggest

They are saying that Milner has been picked as a defender not as a midfielder on Sky sports news.

Maybe Capello is looking for a couple of players who can play in different positions for his World Cup squad along with Walcott?

Pretty disappointed that Walcott is in there. He really has been poor since his return from injury.
