I thought the same Buzzer but every time I put the news one it seems to be haytee (CNN is channel of choice over here in Nippon). Is there more than one way to pronounce it?

How do you pronounce Seaford?

Some say Seafud but those locals who claim to be "Sea-fordians" say that unlike Oxford and just about every other -ford in the country, the accent has to be on the second syllable, i.e. seaFORD.

Makes no sense to me but that's the way they call it.

Yes but if you tried to even it up it'd sound like Southall; and no-one would say South-WELL, would they?

Suppose so.Like Suthick-by-Shoreham,really.

In fact, many residents of South -WELL pronounce it just like that.

Haytee. The pronunciation of the capital Port au Prince is also open to debate as to whether you anglicise it or keep it in its original french format.

Presumably your avaerage Brit holiday-maker would say "Porto Prints" then...

The squaddies in the First War christened Ypres in Belgium as "Wipers"! It's really pronounced Ee-purr.

depends on the french or flemish influence on how a native Belgian would pronounce this , Ee-purr or Ee-pre are both acceptable.

Buzzer you just listen to me here. You don't need a poll to tell you that YOU ARE RIGHT. Anyone who pronounces it HI-TEE or HAY-TEE is simply WRONG but that's ok because the world is full of wrong'uns and without them the rest of us wouldn't be RIGHT so much.

HIGH-EE-TEE

If Haiti was pronounced as in metropolitan French, the 'H' would be silent.

it seems there is a smorgasbord of options for pronouncing Port au Prince, according to Wikipedia :

> Port-au-Prince (pronounced /ˌpɔrtoʊˈprɪns/; French pronunciation: [pɔʁopʁɛ̃s]; Haitian Creole: Pòtoprens)
