From the winter of 1963. That was three seasons before I started going but I certainly remember games being played in the snow - they used to use and orange ball. I don't remember any players wearing gloves either (apart from goalies, obviously).

Blinding photo ,years ago i seem to remember if it snowed heavy and the pitch was covered in it the groundsmen didnt bother trying to clear the snow they just cleared the marker lines so games could take place,thems were the days.

Yep, if you could see the toch lines and the goal-posts it was considered fit to play on - those were the days! Whatever happened to orange balls?

Anybody who doubts the club's potential to fill Falmer only need to look at how packed the East Stand is in that picture (and it was frigging cold that day).

I believe you are correct Sir. That's what my memory tells me. Remember huge snow drifts as well.

Not quite - it started snowing on Boxing Day 1962 (although it probably started earlier oop north and in Jockoland).

Yes we hired a road melter to clear the pitch. The match featured on "Match of the Day" that night, as it was the only fixture that Saturday. We were a poor team that year to be honest having just been relegated from Div 2, and contrived to go straight through to Div 4 before the Bobby Smith years! About 2,000 turned up for a Friendly v Arsenal. We lost 1-2, and a similar result against Palace that started my loathing of them even then.

Peter Downsborogh the Halifax keeper in the picture went on to play for Swindon I think. Very good player if my memory serves my correct.

edit : Just looked him up and he played 3 games for us on loan in 72.
