Surprise, surprise. The religious fanatics are up in arms over a slogan on the side of a bus. The slogan appeals to me as I believe there is no god. However, I do not write an angry and teary letter to various press outlets when I happen to stumble across a sign such as 'God saves' or 'Methodist Church Bring and Buy Sale'. Both of them, suggesting that the disbelievers are wrong.

Thou shalt not pussyfoot round the religious folk for fear of upsetting them.

Good post.

And to be fair the bus adverts say "probably" so they can be deemed to be within the laws of advertising. Quite how the "God Saves" adverts can be allowed is questionable as they can't prove it !

why mate? seems 100% better than your 'gods schlong' rubbish

1)As stated God = Allah. Allah = God. Therefore, well join the dots.

2) If someone put a message on the busses tarring Muslims as bombers and killers then, I think, Muslims would have a right to be angry. Currently the ad on the busses says 'God Probably doesn't exist'. Where does it say anything about stop killing/ blowing up people. It doesn't, does it? So drawing that analogy is, frankly, nowhere near spot on, is it?

3) God should be spelt with a capital 'G', no?

but they are not 'up in arms' are they ??? A quote from a religious man saying he didn't agree with it, is hardly an uprising....I bet if you interviewed an athiest over the 'God Saves' signs, he would probably say what a load of rubbish it was and how religious people are dangerous.

I was pre-empting the 'up in arms' bit as it has happened before and will continue to happen. It is a bit of a baiting and evocative statement, so I expect there will be a backlash.

However, the most important issue here is that Boris said he would take them off the road.

I would assume the point of the second paragraph of his post was to say, it is pretty easy to rubbish Christian beliefs, but it is not acceptable to do so for other religions?

Think its probably best I avoid this one. I'm religous but am quite open-minded to the concept of other religions, and of course those that choose not to accept the existence of religion at all.

What I WOULD like to ask, however, is what the purpose of this campaign would be?

Religions that advertise are not trying to convert as such, but more to encourage back into the fold those who have at some stage been in touch with such beliefs. This has several benefits - financial sustainability as well as boosting the community and having extra pairs of hands for various good causes that the majority of places of religous worship in this country take part in.

However this advert seems to seek purely to UNDERMINE the other religous adverts, as opposed to doing something constructive. I find this quite petty and counter-productive - are those behind it so insecure with the idea of other people having religous views that they feel the need to dissuade them? As I said above, religous groups in this country offer so much, I feel its out of line to actively discourage membership.

I know people will point to the problems religion has caused in the world, but I hardly think the 7/7 bombers got their ideas from the side of a bus.

Do these signs for Bring and Buy Sales actively criticise other religious groups or beliefs? No. They simply advertise their own.

If the humanists want to promote what they do for society (and what exactly do they do?) then thats fine, but it shouldn't be phrased as a shot at other beliefs.

well, you wouldn't really expect Christians to say 'yeah, fine, they have a point' , would you?

However, they should not be taken off the road. Free speech and all that!!

Well, if it was, that's what he should have said, not drawn a ridiculous, hyperbolic analogy. Although, as has been said it's not picking solely on Christians, is it? As far as I'm aware(and I'm happy to be corrected) it's the same God in the Torah, Bible and koran, so saying God probably doesn't exist is aimed equally at all three, I imagine. At least, that's how I read it.

Yes, I was being deadly serious with the 'Bring and Buy' sign. :lolol:

Why should the humanists not phrase it as a 'shot' at the beliefs of who follow God and the Christian ways? Freedom of Speech is an important ethic and surely something that the Church base many of their practices upon? It is mildly antagonistic and when I say mild, we are talking Korma mild.

What do Humanists do? They probably go to the pub on a Sunday, rather than waste it in a drafty church. ;)

I agree with you about free speech and wouldn't want to see this stopped!

BUT, to repeat my earlier point, I just think its a bit destructive without a purpose. A company wouldn't be allowed to bring out an advert purely to try and discredit a rival, without actually promoting anything themselves, yet this seems to be what this idea is doing.

Whilst it's exercising free speech, I think its actually a bit dangerous for an open society - not because it opposes religion but because it is taking a random swipe at a perfectly acceptable (and positive) element of society for absolutely no reason.
