National Anthem

I stand by my suggestion of "In-Ger-Land" to the tune of "Ere we go", for about 90 seconds, getting progressively louder. Accompanied by tribal banging on seats / stadium floors / whatever is to hand.

That would SHIT the opposition up.

In my book, no English footballer should play for the national team unless they are prepared to sing the anthem.

Prima donnas like Rooney probably think its not cool. Thats why many of them are crap - no national pride.

I would ban them till they see sense.

But they're singing about the deification and glorification of some 80-year-old German bint, the unworthiness of themselves, and a concept for which millions have been slaughtered over the past couple of thousand years which they might not necessarily believe in. Tell me, where's the patriotism in that? What pride can be taken from that?

I don't sing 'God Save The Queen', primarily because it has nothing to do with Britain, Britishness, England, Englishness, or for that matter me - and is totally shit dirge of a funeral song to boot. Yet I still think you'll find I'm mildly patriotic. Usually.

La Marseillaise gives me goose bumps when I hear it sung, is that wrong?

Maybe it's because I like "All you need is love" I hope so anyway

Has to be land of hope and glory or jeruslam, but come on admit it, without looking it up who actually knows the words to these??
I suggest a Verse or two of We Hate Palace, Im sure we all know the words to that one ????????

I think we need a "Haka" as well. Any suggestions as to what we should do?

You have your own beliefs but do you honestly believe that Rooney could articulate that?

Besides, the little tribal dance that the All Blacks do is probably steeped in bloodshed and tribalism, but it does them no harm.

I think we need a "Haka" as well. Any suggestions as to what we should do?

I remember reading quite a few letters into the various broadsheets, around the time of the last World Cup. There were calls to stop these war dances from being performed as they encourage, glorify and induce violence.

I think our very own haka would be pivotal in our future successes and we need to pick something that would terrorise the opposition. There really is only one option...

In the incredibly unlikely event that I will EVER be called upon to represent England in anything I would NOT sing GSTQ as, has been pointed out, it is the British anthem, not the English one.

Well done to all the footballers who refuse to sing that dirge. And yes, as a republican the lyrics are the exact opposite of my sentiments.

because a third is a minority?
It's a significant minority though, and it alienates those people who really couldn't give a shit about the Royal family. What's wrong with a national anthem that truly represents a nation?

I care not one jot whether Rooney can articulate that or not, or even if he goes along with that idea or not. The point is, not singing it does NOT make you unpatriotic.

I never suggested it did, but I would contend that the mutual bonding and adrenaline rush that goes with it, is all part of a winning set up.
Not a very pleasant comparison but look what it did to stir Nazi Germany.

I agree. Any national anthem should be there to stir the emotional patriotic juices - it's what it's there for.

Except for 'God Save The Queen' - which doesn't because it's total shit. That's the issue.
