I DO FIND THE SINGING OF THE ANTHEMS BY THE PLAYERS IN THIS RUGBY WORLD CUP REFRESHING.
watching the English players singing God save our queen with so much passion is great to see. In rugby you dont get some fat stuck up opera foreigner singing OUR anthem:rant:, like you do in football. I want to see our English players belting out our anthem like the rugby players.
I do feel also the English rugby supporters out there, could get behind the team more, surley the players derserve more than a dreary swing low. or are they all a bit to stuck up too???
ENGLISH FOOTBALL FANS AND ENGLAND RUGBY TEAM = WINNERS!!!!
I thank you :drink::braders:

...plus the rugby fans don't boo the anthem of their opponents but applaud politely when it is finished, something else that football could take from rugby (think the idea of only captains talking to the ref is a good one)...

It is refreshing to hear the National Anthem sung properly, and I agree about all that f***ing out of tune 'opera' bollocks. However...

I HATE 'GOD SAVE THE QUEEN'.

It is not England's national anthem (in fact, we do not hve one - how PATHETIC is that?), it's the British national anthem. This is a debate which seems to kick on time after time after time, and no-one has the guts or the bollocks to change it.

Please can someone sing an ENGLISH national anthem?

I'd suggest Blake's 'Jerusalem'.

...fair comment TLO, if the Jocks can have Scotland the Brave and the Welsh sing their own (sorry but I can't spell it)...why can't we have one that just applies to England.

I'm with you TLO.

God Save the Queen doesn't represent me, and it's not English. If I was lining up, I'd just stand there respectfully. I don't understand why we can't have a non-royalist anthem anyhow, considering a third of the country is republican.

Scotland sing 'Flower of Scotland', even though it's not their official anthem - they don't have one. It is, however, a national anthem with a decent tune, and (swallow hard, Al and admit it), was sung SUPERBLY by the Scotland fans in Paris on Sunday night. Quite moving.

Side note from Wikipedia: A minor complication with "Flower of Scotland" is that, when played on the bagpipes, one note in the last line (on the word "think") cannot be played correctly. It should be a C natural (when played in the key of D) but this note is not available on the bagpipes, so a C sharp is substituted. So I'm guessing a non-bagpipe playing Scot wrote it. :lolol:

The Welsh sing Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau or 'Land of my Fathers'. Literally Old Country of my Fathers.

There was a letter in the Metro today about a chap who was applying for a wedding license.

He claimed to be English, but was told that he was either British or a 'citizen of the UK'. The registrar went on to explain than Welsh, Irish and Scottish were legitimate nationalities, but not English. Why would we need a National Anthem if we do not exist? ???

Thats an excellent example of useless general knowledge

Because GSTQ is representative of the whole of the UK, not just England, that is why we should have an alternative...what do they play at medal ceremonies at the Commonwealth Games, where we compete as England?

Yep, and now you're stuck with that knowledge.

The point about a national anthem is that it should be just that - an anthem. For me, 'Land of Hope & Glory', rousing though it is, is part of a bigger piece (Pomp & Circumstance by Elgar), and should therefore be considered more ceremonial rather than anthemic.

Wikipedia again...

Land of Hope and Glory is a British patriotic song, found to an extent throughout the Commonwealth Realms. It is particularly noted for being played on the occasion of the Last Night of the Proms amidst much flag-waving, and for having long been seen as the unofficial anthem of the Conservative Party. The tune for the song was taken from the first of Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance marches, which is used as a graduation march in some American and Hungarian universities and high schools.

The song is also used as the anthem of England at the Commonwealth Games.

In my book, no English footballer should play for the national team unless they are prepared to sing the anthem.

Prima donnas like Rooney probably think its not cool. Thats why many of them are crap - no national pride.

I would ban them till they see sense.
