This is what we have to do to kick on.

Our record against the top teams is exceptional. Yesterday's game was ridiculously open, but that is unusual.

To advance, up the league, we need more goals in those tight games. This is probably less to do with tactics and more to do with raising the level of attacking quality

Citeh couldn't break down Palace.
Having a low block, and three massive fast attacking players is hard to deal with.
Dyche's Everton were much the same.
On average these teams are hard to watch, but they will snatch points.
Only when the go a goal behind do they consider a different play, and then risk getting stuffed,

Maybe the smart move would be to low block back and play out a series of 0-0s against these shit teams,
snatching the occasional win - like we did at Newcastle.

Can't escape the thought that you've reached the conclusion that the league must be weaker this year just to defend your view that Hurzeler isn't a good manager. I can't see any other logic to it.

I’m sorry you feel like that, as I have clearly outlined the reason why, and highlighted it is a subjective discussion.

I have given FH credit where it’s due, Newcastle away particularly was outstanding, excellent shape out of possession, but equally that is the area for improvement which I have also mentioned on countless threads.

He has a lot to learn and needs to adapt his tactics a bit more IMO.

The "big 6" are having a weak season, Man U, Man City and Spurs particularly so. Liverpool have won the title at a canter with a low total, but they've also not picked up many points since the title was confirmed, and would otherwise be higher. Next season these clubs will improve.

The bottom three have been woeful. The lack of points gained between them means that the totals for the middle of the pack are much higher than usual (hence we are fighting for 8th with a points total that normally would be competing for 6th).

Newcastle and Villa, and us to a lesser extent, showed you can step up and compete with the big boys (albeit with mega spending from dubious sources). The big story this season is the progression of the middle of the pack. Forest, us, Bournemouth, Brentford, Fulham and Palace are all very competitive. This is why the PL is a great league, it's unpredictable.

I know we won so all good but I just can't understand why an experienced pro would do that?! The kid who's just turned 17 on the other flank showed him what he should be doing.

OT but I do think this is an issue with Pervis. I quite often find myself frustrated with his decision making and overall think he is a weak link in the side these days. Hoping Ferdi is the answer at LB next season or we sign an alternative if not.

There was a moment in the second half where Pervis lost possession easily but incredibly got a lucky bounce off the Liverpool player and ended up with the ball again. He was very lucky to get away with it as it would have left us very exposed

Of course. There are plenty of examples of weaker teams effectively frustrating a superior side.

I just think with us, it happens a little too often. To get us to the next stage (and i'm very satisfied with where we are, but I guess the club are looking up the league) , we need to find these goals in tight games where we're being low blocked.

The key I think, is the front players and Ayari type lock pickers, just raising their level just a bit. But given they are mostly young players and their trajectory seems to be going upwards, this is something I think we will see.

I don't like your idea about low blocking them ourselves. I'm not sure it plays to our strengths.

We can agree he still has plenty to learn but he seems very eager to do so unlike many managers such as Amorim who after just a few weeks at Man Utd said "I'll never change'. I'd say he's already been the most adaptable of our Premier League era managers and we can look forward to further evolution.

Can’t disagree with any of that. He really does like to absorb…..

I do think he should have reacted quicker in a few games, and the shape we had at Brentford should never have happened.

I really enjoyed the Adam’s/McGhee interview and think he is evolving.

I think Ayari is very exciting. His recent goals point toward an emerging confidence and self belief. He is a very clever footballer. If we retain Baleba, having the 4 of them vying for the midfield will be no bad thing, and potentially essential if we do make the Conference.

Absolutely the key to it.
His football intelligence is already at a high level.

Not to mention the weird attempt to chest/head it back to Bart that Webster got him out of trouble with. I thought the reaction from the other players to that was interesting, they were almost trying to get him to calm down. He is like an excitable child/puppy at times, very likeable but I think he does need to slow down and engage his brain a bit more sometimes.

It leaves us with strong competition in the engine-room, cover for injuries, resting players etc. Also Fab typically subs off Belaba’s partner towards the end, I presume to keep the intensity…..there’s room for all 4.

We’ve failed to win practically every pressure game beating teams above you tells a story they don’t come with much expectation or pressure.
We have a flaw in the system that teams exploit we concede far to many goals we can’t expect to win 3-2 every week at this level.
Shut up shop and beat most of the bottom six at home and we wouldn’t be relying on 20 different permertations to get into Europe.
Don’t get me wrong it was a good game last night although that game isn’t going to be as open mid season. Like someone else mentioned it was like the couple of end of season games against City when they were bang on form.
