Trump's presidency provides a window in which autocratic leaders know they can act with total impunity. It gives them an opportunity to resolve long standing disputes whilst drumming up nationalist fervour at home.Despite my glib post earlier I sincerely hope this doesn't escalate further. I've been looking for reports of Pakistan's intentions/actions other than "we are in the process of retaliating".
Two nuclear nations, the possibility of huge casualty numbers can't be underestimated.
FFS its as if people all over the world are just looking to go to war at the moment.
I hope also that it doesn't bring the two communities over here into conflict.
Exactly. They know that, at worst, they’ll have to endure a couple of meetings with Steve Witless and Trump throwing his weight around before he gets bored and goes away.Trump's presidency provides a window in which autocratic leaders know they can act with total impunity. Things usually turn out better when you say, "I'm not watching this shit, I'm going to bed."Trump will have it resolved by tea time tomorrow.
Trump will have it resolved by tea time tomorrow.
This is exactly what has been happening with Hindu nationalism and Modi, a populist autocrat who presides over India which is only a ‘democracy’ in name:Trump's presidency provides a window in which autocratic leaders know they can act with total impunity. It gives them an opportunity to resolve long standing disputes whilst drumming up nationalist fervour at home.
The timing of that announcement yesterday was classicWell that trade deal with the fascist Modi looked good for 10 minutes.
This is my sense of it. That there's isn't an obvious aggressor as in the Russia Ukraine conflict. Both sides have competing claims over the same land, neither of which are completely invalid. As with all conflicts over territory and cultural/religious occupation, there are nuances and different perspectives that are often not expressed in an even handed way.

Pakistan, turning a blind eye to the actions of terrorists / freedom fighters (delete as appropriate). India, more accurately Modi, wanting to play the strongman
No, but I don't believe missiles should have been fired by India eitherSeriously? You believe tourists are legitimate terrorist targets? There’s an incredibly clear aggressor here to my mind.

This dispute didn't begin with the recent atrocity to which you refer. I'm happy to cede to those better read on this than me, but just from what i've picked up on it over the years, both sides here can fairly point to historic injuries and transgressions and frustrated claims over the disputed lands.I would have preferred it if it had been handled diplomatically and by police action, but there’s a very clear aggressor here.
It wasn’t India attacking tourists, it was terrorists based in, and sheltered by Pakistan. I can’t quite believe anyone thinking “oh well, faults on both sides.”
The aggressor is 100% clear, and it’s Pakistan.

What is needed in those circumstances is both sides acting like grown ups, not taking the chance to shore up their domestic position by acting like a tough guy. Preferably with some sort of international mediation it's possible to deescalate. But both sides have to want to do it
No much different to Kamala Harris thenI had BBC or Sky News on and typed verbatim as he said it. He’s the ultimate waffler, filling silences with meaningless dross …. then being proud with himself for his statesmanlike words in his parallel universe.
