Maybe you are, and I will correct my own post. It is 45 other countries as we are the 46th.
Ask yourself why Sir Winston Churchill wanted to start it, and why those other countries thought cooperation was a good idea.

It wasn't to correct Britain's homework.
I suspect that large numbers of people have picked up on the anti convention trope without understanding what it is.

My recollection is that during the Brexit 'end game' some Tories (ERG types) mooted binning the convention because it is 'European' and something 'we' don't need.

Conveniently this would allow us to break the convention so as to implement out 'Brexit promises'.
(The real reason for the mooting).

The ERG put 'Leave' above everything and so were prepared to bin any convention that potentially blocked the achievement of 'freedom' from the EU.

Of course the convention has nothing to do with the EU but this was easily misrepresented and many people were duped into swallowing the conflation. If @TomandJerry fits into this group he's not alone.

This illustrates how easy it is for well-meaning people to be sucked down into a vortex of what amounts to self harm by devious fanatics like the ERG, prepared to sell their own granny for freedom from the EU.
With Farage applauding and sniggering into his beer.

Nothing is sacrosanct any more, now the nationalist 'any price for freedom' trope has become normalized.
Row-back is going to take time and hard work, and cool heads, because people imagine they have moved on...

Let's not forget Sunak, was he an ERG member?

The suggestion from Badfish was that a system should be put in place whereby people who wish to come to the UK should be allowed to do so safely. Specifically in respect of the small boaters, but obviously it would be extended to all. Essentially illegal immigrants would be legitimised.
I think the emphasis is on the term 'safely'. In the ideal scenario the immigrants would then be assessed for asylum status. Those who do not reach the requirements would then be returned; easier said than done but I assume you are not suggesting that 'unsafe' crossings for anyone would be preferable......

More than happy to be made correct on this one:

(He also makes comments on the ECHR in the article)

"The MP, who represents Pendle and Clitheroe in Lancashire, said too many voters felt the party is “not for them anymore”. He argued that there is “nothing economically left-wing” about high levels of immigration, and suggested Labour had the right priorities on immigration but had not yet done enough to bring down net migration levels.

Hinder also said that there is “less and less integration” in the UK, arguing that “we’ve been asleep at the wheel as a country”. There are “in many cases more parallel lives being lived” because of a lack of integration, he claimed."

Says the MP holding a 900 vote majority, with the Conservatives and Reform combined, banking 7,000 more votes. I wonder what drove him to come out with his statement?

I do not like Farage but this Indian deals timing is perfection for Reform....can't really disagree with too much of what he's saying in this instance.

I don't want to be accused of trolling but, I really don't understand.

"Officials said the deal involved no change to immigration policy but would facilitate visa routes for Indian professionals in certain sectors."

So I'm confused as to what's going on

You've gotta think labour have just made a complete balls up of their communication of the deal. Because on the face of it , it looks absolutely horrendous !! You would imagine the 3 years free NI will apply to jobs that actually need workers.

That's why I'm trying to make sense of the detail

Of course what Nigel knows is that there is already a long list of countries where this applies.

If he has time on his hands maybe he should a friendly word with Trump about the 14 Million the US Embassy owes in parking and congestion charges which it refuses to pay.

As always these fuckers will say anything to keep their precious MP status, it reminds me of that odious Green Cllr and Deputy Leader of Brighton & Hove CC Hannah Allbrook who on losing her seat a couple of years ago went into full rant mode on socials the next day suggesting it “So rfcucking cruel that her political career had been cut short” Then someone a little more grown up suggested it wasn’t her career that was important more her constituents needs being the priority
