HMG trying to be all things to all people, scared of Reform in the Midlands/Wales/Northern marginals. Interesting analysis from John Curtice on that recently in a radio interview. Ironically Corbyn tried the same thing in the Dec 2019 GE, but in a far more amateurish way, torn to shreds in interviews.

Personally talks of full reentry to the EU or at the least a Norway style agreement, would elate me. But I take this move by Labour as a positive first step.
Spot on.
All of that ^

"Britain and India have agreed a long-desired trade deal that ministers said would add £4.8bn a year to the UK economy by 2040.

The agreement, which was finalised on Tuesday after more than three years of negotiations under successive governments, has long been touted as one of the biggest prizes of Brexit."

What an absolute shambles....

Can only see this driving down salaries and quality in tech. How the hell are we subsidising Indians to come and work here now ?? Please someone explain the positives here.

If I was a grad now I would be heading straight to Dubai ... Seems pointless getting a degree at this point if a company can just hire someone from outside of this country 20% cheaper.

The deal promises a boon for the UK’s car and alcohol industries, which have suffered from the impact of Donald Trump’s tariffs in the US.

India’s tariffs on British whisky and gin will be halved from 150% to 75% before reducing to 40% by the 10th year of the deal, according to the business department.

Tariffs on British cars will be reduced from 100% to 10%, with quotas set on the number of British cars that can be exported to India and vice-versa.

Under the deal, India will cut tariffs across 90% of British product lines, including cosmetics, lamb, salmon, soft drinks, chocolate and biscuits, as well as medical devices, aeroplane parts and electrical machinery. Based on 2022 figures, the tariff cuts are worth £400m.

The UK will lower tariffs on Indian clothes, footwear and food products. Ministers said this would give consumers access to cheaper products and more choice.

Most of the above will just go into the government coffers to spunk up the wall. There are loads of IT workers on this board and this is a shite deal for those people and patently unfair that one group of people (especially from outside the country!) can come in and pay less tax. Wtf.

'The UK will lower tariffs on Indian clothes, footwear' ..... Can't wait to buy more of this tat.

Adding £4.8B a year to GDP by 2040, by which time Brexit will have cost us well north of £2 Trillion pounds in reduced GDP and will still be costing £100B a year.

So reducing our losses from £100B per year £95.2B per year from 2040 and that's one of the biggest prizes

And encourage increased immigration, you really couldn't make it up, except of course, Nige and Boris did and people believed them :shootself

"Officials said the deal involved no change to immigration policy but would facilitate visa routes for Indian professionals in certain sectors. There will be no exemption from the UK’s forthcoming carbon tax as part of the deal, although talks on this continue."

As part of the agreement, the UK and India will strike a double contribution convention under which Indian workers temporarily living in the UK will not have to pay national insurance contributions for three years. The same applies to British workers in India, and meets a key demand by Delhi.

Certainly not encouraging increased immigration :lolol:

Absolutely, it's a two way deal.

I would actively encourage any Indian professionals to come and work in the UK that are needed, and this would be a sweetener to that

Devil hopefully is in the detail because on the face of it this is an absolutely rubbish deal.

Ultimate irony that a load of semi racist Muppets voted for Brexit and because of that (again on the face of it) we will be flooded with Indians into the country.
