Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
I double checked the original post date, as I thought this MUST be an old resurrected thread! Where have people be living, in a cave? Or spending 15 years at Her/His Majesty's Pleasure? 😂
It can take us old buggers a long time to pluck up the courage to take the plunge in to anything new.

For the last five years once a week i do my mother’s shopping and use scan & go, at least 1 in 4 times i get stopped for a bag check and i have never felt the staff member to rude or disrespectful, if anything they are embarrassed, however it comes as no surprise to me at all that one of your little anecdotes would hold some drama 🤦
I have no reason to think my husband would lie. If he said the assistant was rude, then I believe him, despite what you think of me.

All the time we had a bank nearby we went to the counter. Now our nearest bank is 12 miles away to the east and to the west.

Using Contactless, I’ve never had to had to use a pi, which is why it’s called contactless.

More expensive items require a pin, but the card is inserted.
No, occasionally a pin is asked for on small purchases as part of the security

Okay I'll ask a different question, does your husband leave a train if the ticket inspector asks to see his ticket, after all CCTV would see him put a ticket through the barrier at the station he joined the train

He doesn't put a ticket through the barrier. It's on his phone. Surely you knew that train tickets are modernised now?

As I have said previously, the attitude of the assistant was a lot to do with it. She was very rude.
Nobody complains if someone says politely, Do you mind if I do a routine check, please?

Tickets are often issued still in paper form, it depends on the route. Last time I went to London I had to collect a paper ticket (from the machine) rather than download to google wallet as is often the case.

On the odd occasion we have had to purchase tickets for a home cup game I bought 5, one for each person I was travelling with, I won't make that mistake again, was a right phaff at the barrier at Lewes as I had them all on my phone and to make matter worse the barriers were closed when we got back to Lewes after the game as well
