Having got home and now watched back some bits I'm even more angry - 100% a booking for Burn early on which he didn't give a foul for and a yellow changes the game.
Both pens obviously incorrect.
Wieffer non 2nd yellow the only correct call of the day but it could have been given.
O'Riley pen there is 100% contact, he'd have given it to Newcastle and it would never ever have been overturned.
The Ayari handball is 100% but it wasn't a foul by JPvH so in essence another incorrect call.
An avalanche of appallingness and thats not allowing for the 50/50 calls of which he gave every single one against us. One of the very worst refereeing displays you will ever see and one of the very few where there is a genuine case to be argued of bias.
Welbeck was pushed to the ground from behind, in the second half.
A lesser challenge by Minteh 20 seconds later was immediately given as a freekick.

Welbz let Pawson know what he felt about it, and then followed up on a similarly inconsistent call to get his yellow.

If Welbz is telling you, you're having a shit day...... You're having an absolute shocker.

One of those where you can only conclude he is biased or was paid off.
There has always been an unconscious bias from Prem refs towards the "big" clubs.
We see it every week.

I would say it equates to about a 55/45 advantage for the bigger clubs.
Kevin Friend was always the worst for it, with closer to a 60/40 split, it seemed.

Yesterday pushed that normal level to the extreme.
Only counteracted, when the crowd really got on his back.

Very shit performance, from a very shit ref.

Bang! And the dirt is gone.
I know people will say he isn't crooked, 'just' incompetent. But, from watching yesterday, I find it hard to think Geordie Craig wasn't incentivised to give Newcastle decisions. If he wasn't, he shouldnt be allowed near a Sunday league match, let alone the Premier League. Amd if he was, he should he strung up by his goolies and poked with sh_t on a stick.

So, we all got it wrong, it wasn’t Ayari who stuck out an arm to give away a penalty, according to the PL it was Pervis.

The incompetence is palpable.

I'm not going to reply to my own post but from having seen the replays it's good to know that my own reffing experience hasn't let me down. The Times also questions why our pen wasn't properly checked.

Wieffer appears to have been booked for holding onto the ball not the initial foul.

Talking of people stealing a living, Danny Murphy on MOTD2 last night defending var without pointing out it missed an obvious one. It was left to Rooney to point out the incompetence of the ref

The report in the Times questions why the O'Riley "penalty" wasn't considered by VAR.
Tonali certainly kicked O'Riley many times harder than the incident where Lamptey's foot tapped Gordon (and he was pulling it away). I didn't really think it was worthy of a penalty but, likewise, the Lamptey call was a joke given the minimal level of contact.

Funnily enough that's how I saw it.
Easy to see Ayari stick his arm out but I thought I saw it go under his arm and then hit Pervis'. The view in the full match coverage replays look clearer than the highlights.

The level of consistency was shocking from Pawson yesterday. Wilson not being booked late on for doing the EXACT same thing Wieffer did to get his yellow boiled my blood. I also agree that the kick on MO'R probably didn't warrant a penalty, but it spoke volumes that Pawson, who had been so whistle happy for Newcastle, didn't even blink. An all round shocking performance.

I'd love to hear the mic'd up version for the gordon penalty. I suspect they were initially checking if it was a foul and settled for outside the box as a least contentious outcome.

Once the decision was it was out of the area VAR couldn't then disagree with the ref to whether it was a foul or a dive.

Murphy was talking out of his arse. Created a whole scenario around Newcastle's brilliant attacking play which he illustrated with a string of woeful decision making by their players. Only managed 5 shots on target (presumably one being the pen) and no goals from open play. I never thought they would score unless Pawson gave it to them which he eventually managed by giving them a dodgy free kick on the edge of the box which they could do no better than blast at the wall to 'win' the penalty.
