This guy, Zach Denver, now living in Durango, Colorado is heavily invested in BMX racing. He has learned over time to love the brmmmm, brmmmm.

But he told me he has never been on a motorcycle because Ann from Aspen, his mother, never let him. Considering the daredevil mentality of his father that was quite surprising to me.

Whilst a moped MUST be ridden by revving the bollox out of them you'd be challenged to ride a real motorbike the same way.

You'd either lose your license or your life ....
It doesn’t seem that way in the Newhaven and Peacehaven area, there seems to be plenty of motorbikes with small engines ridden by complete dickheads, these motorcycles also have very loud exhaust pipes.
Revving them seems to make the exhaust pop and bang, these riders seem to appear at traffic lights and crossings and make as much noise to intimidate drivers to move out of the way.

I will add there are plenty of sensible motorcyclists in our area that don’t ride around like twats and draw attention to themselves,.

We have a plague of them here, especially food delivery boys. Mainly because even clapped out second hand cars cost around 18 months of minimum wage.
Skinny young men hunched over the handle bars, weaving in and out of traffic dangerously, leaving chaos in their wake, and revving the arse out of their bikes.
Rat boys I call them.

As a 16 yo, I recall gaining the freedom and independence on saving for and owning my first bike, back in 72/73 - an early Yamaha FS1-E, in that classic original metallic gold paintwork - bought secondhand from a private address Peacehaven and ridden back to Horsham.

However, it never seemed cool back then to make a racket & annoy the neighbours or other road users. No point in trying a burn out from the traffic lights! I cringe when I see today's novice bikers on L-plates screaming around, (exhaust baffles removed?), driving down narrow gaps in the centre of 2-lane traffic, &/or tailgating, on greasy, gravelly surfaces seemingly without a thought for the consequences. I ask myself if I ever rode like that... hopefully not.

My contemporaries and I were more interested in the challenge of pushing the strict moped Regs by seeking a little more performance - fine tuning the engine or exhaust (drilling out the baffles - not sure what good that did...). One of the guys was a science geek and he went down the exotic fuels route, experimenting with all sorts of fluids in trying extract half a horse power out of his Puch 'Maxi'. Don't know how it never exploded into a box of bits... Having said that, the dear old high-revving two-stroke engines already made a bit of a din - and proper big-banger 4-strokes were the norm.

It seemed to be a precious 18 months or so until we could graduate onto something regarded as a more serious motorcycle. Passing through various 125s & 250s, then ultimately in my case up to a Honda 400/Four. We drooled at thought of Norton Commandos, Triumph Tridents, maybe a Honda 750/Four or Suzuki 750 water cooled - or the ultimate, a Kawasaki Z-1. All quite tame by today's standards but rocket ships back then.

Curiously, most of us soon had epiphanies and moved onto four wheels. I think a few near misses plus the warmth and comfort of a car was more alluring to female company. But goodness, I wish I still had that Honda 400/Four, quite tame by modern standards but that gorgeous 4 -into-1 exhaust manifiold was a really sexy piece of engineering art, back in its day...

Having said that, it must be a nightmare to somehow ride and safely navigate through today's potholes, let alone in the dark and wet. Scary.

We have that problem too but also plagued by noisy BMWs that just have to wheelspin every time they pull away.
Usually completely blacked out windows and driven by dickheads.

I've even noticed people using quad bikes on the roads in Peacehaven lately

Doesn’t surprise me, I occasionally see one at the back of Peacehaven but it could be a farm worker.
Thankfully I haven’t seen many off road motorcycles being ridden illegally recently, I would regularly see them on the roads in the area and also the farm fields and footpaths at the back of Peacehaven.

You must miss the bloke zipping around on the electric motorbike most days, he seems to vistit many different houses for a very short time but doesn't seem to be a food delivery driver.

I wonder what he could be up to.

Anyway, back to the point. Loud pipes save lives. Riding like a dickhead, no, making every effort to ensure other road users hear you and you don't end up another smidsy statistic, yes.

'Meals' on wheels? Care in the community type stuff ?

BoT. 2 strokes are generally louder, especially when tuned . . . . But there's a horrible rash of cheap chines 125 4 strokes about, Learner legal, with non existent silencers fitted.

as an engine lover, I hate them they sound horrible . . .and they're very loud, ie over the legal limit . . . . For reference my race car passes a 95db test for track days, but is loud enough to scare hippies and the middle class greenies with children If I ever drive it in town 😂

more than happy for idiots and twats to crash and burn. Tidy up the gene pool a bit.

In Bali now, population about 4.6 million.
Registered motor scooters 4.1 million.
It is like a plague.
Spent a day out up in the mountains yesterday, scooter free zone !! well, nearly.
Thought exactly the same when we went last year. Travelling up to Ubud in a taxi felt like we had a thousand scooter escort. Some of them had FOUR people on one little scooter!

I have definitely seen more electric bikes around, maybe they have taken over from the illegal motorcycle. I have no clue if electric motorbikes are street legal.

The loud exhaust on small motorcycles and dickhead riders go together IMO.
What does the law say on adapting a motorcycle exhaust to sound like a firework display?

Pinched from a web site . . . .

We know they’re legal because we make them that way, and they’re stamped with the British Standard reference for road use to prove it (BS AU 193a: 1990/T3 to be precise).

This has been the std for years . . . .We used to get pulled by the pigs very regularly in the late 80's/early 90's as they were paid extra by Thatcher to be ****s.
