They have a duty free customs limit of $800 so would need to be below that to legally take over the border into the US and not pay any duty, as I understand it. Although with the tariffs etc who knows if that will change.
may have changed that already to prevent all the individual items coming through from ebay, temu sellers.

Zeihan can sometimes be a bit sensationalist IMO...but this is where he thinks it's heading. "It's a beautiful thing...😳"

What gets me is Trump keeps saying all these countries are paying the US government billions of dollars, making the US mega rich. Does he even understand how tariffs work, can he be that STUPID or is it just for MAGA morons who believe him. China, Britain, EU etc haven't paid the US government one single dime, American companies are the ones paying, but you guys don't need telling because you are not stupid.

The idiot claims the tariffs are generating $2bn dollars a day for the U.S.

He provided no evidence to back this claim.

Meanwhile he’s wiped something like $30tn off the global markets.

Hopefully the American people that are losing billions due to his stupidity will club together and hire a hitman to take him out.

I genuinely wouldn't be at all surprised if we woke up to the news Trump had passed in the night. He's upsetting some very wealthy people with clout who may not tolerate the derailing of their gravy train that much longer.

There's an excellent podcast called Kill List. A journalist discovers a site on the darknet on which people can hire out hitmen and the like.

I think one of the listings or postings he mentioned was paying around $7,000. Seven thousand dollars. For a human life. Utterly crazy.

It really is a good listen if you're into podcasts.

Bond yields going up quite a bit too.
  • UK 10y up 40 bps from ~4.4 to 4.8% a 10% increase
  • US 10y up 50 bps from ~3.9 to 4.4% a 15% increase
Which suggests selling, which suggests???

Either way, not great...

Trump's understanding of tariffs is about as good as Johnson's was of Trade deals and borders, but keep shouting long and loud enough and enough fools will vote for you

From CNN:

"Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent expressed his vision of negotiating trade deals with US allies, which would pave the way for a unified strategy to address what he called China’s unbalanced trade practices during a summit on Wednesday."

What US allies?

Russia must be about all they have left.

They've torched every other bridge they had just a few weeks ago.

From what I can see Trump pretty much exclusively addresses his remarks to the people who voted for him. Other people may respond either analytically or by running around in a panic - either suits his purpose.

Pleasing to read China, Canada and the EU are all now reciprocating with fresh tariffs. Good to also see the cost of borrowing has now gone up the US.

I wonder when/if his advisors will start to whisper in his ear?

But it is his own electorate providing the 2 billion per day.

The tariffs are applied as the goods pass through customs. The importer, who ordered the goods some weeks/months back at say an imaginary $1 million dollars (already paid to the factory/manufacturer) is now being hit with import tariffs. If the goods are from China let’s say this now adds another $1 million to his costs. This is now also paid as the goods will not clear customs without payment. The importer has now paid $2 million for the goods. They then increase the price to the retailers, who in turn increase the price to the end user.

The American electorate, not Chinese companies, are paying the extra $2 billion per day. Well done MAGA voters :lolol:

Not forgetting the state and local taxes which will then also be added which will further increase the cost to the consumer

How do they stop people driving over the border to Canada to buy them.
Maybe this is how the invasion of Canada happens, give them all tanks and let them go get their Nintendos

What he's effectively done is introduce a National Sales Tax that all Americans will have to pay to the American Treasury whenever they purchase anything that comes from abroad, has parts that come from abroad, or is assembled (even in part) abroad. The funniest bit is that I don't believe he's understood that :lolol:

I fail to see the humorous element In all of this. What the bonkers eejut has done will cause nothing but harm to Joe Public worldwide.
