"Brighton fans" sounds like there's some sort of particular human phenotype that has gathered to support the team. Same as when we say Leeds or Chelsea fans are wankers... when in reality, there's thousands and thousands of different individuals in any group of supporters. Easily forgotten but important to remember in situations like this - hopefully most Crawley fans understand that most Brighton fans are never going to send death threats to anyone.

I agree there is no need to have a pop at the club or the town but Williams deserves to be focused on. That wasn't just a late challenge it was reckless and endangered the opponent. He wasn't even booked (refs fault) and then proceeded to pull, kick push and wrestle any Albion player that got near him. Then when a player dared to go down he would get in their face as if they were faking it. He goes on to play for the foreseeable while MOR is in the bloody hospital.

But that's because this is a football forum.
The stuff I shout out at a game, doesn't bear any relation to reasoned argument and is ALWAYS disproportionate to my true feelings on whatever, I am reacting to.

Williams was clearly "putting down a marker" and massively overdid it. Probably because he's not very good, more than intent to injure.
I would hope he will apologise for it as a professional courtesy, but if he doesn't, it will matter very little.

It's a tackle. He a tackling midfielder whose job it was to disrupt us. I don't think his job was to seriously injure one of our players, he just got that wrong. He did it, but that doesn't in my view justify the meltdown on here about him as a player and his character. It's just a tackle that went wrong.

My point was that it could have been any other lower league midfield 'hard man' whose job it is to get in the face of premier league opposition and knock them out of their stride. I bet our managers have given dozens of players in the past instructions to do just the same thing.

And it definitely works the other way round. Highlighting callous posts by a few beered up Crawley fans against O’Riley and then painting them as all like this is equally wrong as saying we are all sending death threats. We have reached that stage where the worst elements in both fan bases are feeding off each other and are in danger of sucking the rest of us in. Let’s get some perspective, hope O’Riley recovers quickly from his op and then move on

It wasn’t a tackle at all unless you have a different definition. He wanted to ‘put one on him’ pure and simple. The smile and wink put the tin lid on it for me.

Again, I just don’t get the apologist approach from some people. It was a brutal challenge and the idea of ‘the enforcer’ a la Vinnie Jones went out decades ago. The only reason we’re still talking about this is that some people, and I suspect there’s a few closet Crawley fans among them, keep complaining that it was nothing more than a robust challenge that MOR wasn’t quick enough to get out of the way of. I’m guessing that a lot of people on the pro-thuggery side weren’t actually at the game at all. The atmosphere was horrible and the Crawley fans had a lot of deeply unpleasant people among them.
